In fairness, and you may or may not find any solace in this, but no one has ever known how the world will be in the near or far future. Not for sure.

Focus on what you can control and prepare for, and otherwise focus on what are really the important things in life. Our closest people, whatever health we have, and bettering ourself. Beyond those priorities, and safety and physiological needs, everything else is extra fluff. That fluff includes whether we see the new Bond film this year, 2021 or 2022.

If EON and their associates truly have paid the debt back, then yeah they have no incentive to rush this out. It may be 2021/22 before it's out. That'd be wild.

It will be 2022 for sure...at this point 2021 is going to be a very transitional year and even if there is a vaccine by end of year no way of telling if it's fully effective until 6-7 months after its released....people are also not going to be rushing to the theater when there is a vaccine....best bet is to wait until 1H22 or 2H22 to be fully safe and even then the world may not be fully back to normal......nothing EON or anyone could do as no one could have predicted the pandemic that we are in.

As far as the United States is concerned, I don't see NTTD being released in November or the remainder of 2020. Tenet was to be the canary in the coal mine regarding a wide release in the US and it's now been delayed again. Warner Brothers may release Tenet overseas first. Maybe NTTD will be released in Europe and parts of Asia this year, but not here.

Was just reading about the possible plans for the release of Tenet. Overseas first, then in various cities across the U.S. that have a handle on C-19.
Some people would complain even if you hang them with a new rope

Piracy will kill the box office, then. Releasing in some markets but not others - with a massive wait in between - will not go well for them.

It would be interesting to know the numbers on any of the premium new rental releases and then subsequent sales.
I’d like a home release but they have to get the right platform and I think money would talk rather than quality

They'd need to then compare a projected VOD release to a box office release w/ subsequent VOD release months later. I can't see them making nearly as much with a VOD-only release that skips a theatrical release.

It's pretty certain they'll wait until they can release the film theatrically, at the same time across the major markets (the US, the UK, maybe China - places like Australia wouldn't matter so much).

They need to release the film in November via streaming or digital download and potentially with a Blu Ray / DVD available for Xmas 2020.

Cinema is dead unfortunately. It was before the pandemic (a slow and painful death). With the rise of VOD and steaming services and a massive step forward in terms of home cinema options it's just a matter of time.
There are very few films I reserve for the cinema these days and even though Bond is definitely one of them I'd happily pay 20 dollars to watch this film on my TV at home.

I'd love for the Bond films to be pioneers in this area.

Horror movies with $10-$20 million budgets are doing the $20 rental thing. Whoever wrote the $200m check for NTTD aren't about to go that route. The eventual model for a working post-theatrical motion picture economy hasn't been discovered yet.

Not sure that cinema is dead. In fact, more people attended the cinema over the last two years in the UK than they have done since the 70’s. The young demographic also drink less now than ever before and so it’s an ideal date night as well as pulling in more traditional demographics. I think there’s often a tendency to herald the death of cinema but as a regular attendee (once or twice a week) I don’t see that in my experience or in the statistical evidence. After the pandemic, however, will be a very different story.

    https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/tenet-tosses-playbook-staggered-rollout-may-be-new-box-office-normal-1303932
A staggered rollout for a tentpole such as Tenet cannot be compared to a platform release for an independent film, which generally debuts first in New York City and Los Angeles. Nor will is it equivalent to an old-school roadshow release, which saw a movie play for months and months. Piracy and shortened home entertainment windows have altered the landscape. But after months of no revenue, studios and theater owners are willing to take a chance.

Only a matter of time before it gets delayed again. Lots of studios pushing things back more now.
  • johnraidersjohnraiders Posts: 97MI6 Agent
I’m stunned they’re doing that with Tenet.
China have a max length running time for cinemas during COVID and Tenet is too long to be shown.
Tenet is a movie I’d go to the cinema for

NTTD will likely be over 2 hours as well if reports are correct. That means no China release for the foreseeable future.

Mulan is now delayed indefinitely. Disney is also delaying by a year the tentpole films originally scheduled for 2021 and 2022.

You don't think they'd cut the film down to make it showable?

I've said this before, and it may be an 'out there' idea, but how about they split this into 2 films? Bond 25 and Bond 26? Possible or unrealistic?
    1 - LALD, 2 - AVTAK, 3 - LTK, 4 - OP, 5 - NTTD, 6 - FYEO, 7 - SF, 8 - DN, 9 - DAF, 10 - TSWLM, 11 - OHMSS, 12 - TMWTGG, 13 - GE, 14 - MR, 15 - TLD, 16 - YOLT, 17 - GF, 18 - DAD, 19 - TWINE, 20 - SP, 21 - TND, 22 - FRWL, 23 - TB, 24 - CR, 25 - QOS

    1 - Moore, 2 - Dalton, 3 - Craig, 4 - Connery, 5 - Brosnan, 6 - Lazenby

At 2h 45mins, it only needs another 16 minutes to make the two 'halves' 90mins long.

Even if it’s long enough to get two films out of it, I doubt it would have enough substance to work as two. The last two didn’t even have enough substance for one film.

So true... I’ve seen music videos with more substance than Spectre.
    Yes. Considerably!

US is only opening in select cities, though. Not a total rollout. And as we sit here today there’s no way to tell where those cities might be. Can’t imagine that’s going to be appealing to EON. And a second wave in Europe and Asia is both likely and would further derail the release in November.

A new TENET release date is confirmed every couple weeks. These plans all mean less than nothing until they happen, sadly.

Disney just pulled a wild move - MULAN "in some theaters" (probably meaning in countries that got their act together) but same-day premiere on Disney+ for an additional $30 rental :o
