I agree. I think that Ellis falls in line with the literary Bond, right? I have only read Casino Royale so I could be wrong. I could be conflating how Jack Reacher is in those books and not Bond. In any event, I think Tom Ellis would be a good choice assuming he could do the physical things. I follow him on IG and he seems to have some athletic ability.

OK, so we just started watching LUCIFER Season 5. Tom Ellis has really, really bulked up his physique since the show began. Seriously, look at how he is in S5 compared to S1 and it's a pretty amazing body transformation.

He's only 41. I suspect that he may be vying for Bond after Craig because he's a very young looking 41 and he's got a build now to rival Craig's in CR. Even if he's not going after the role of Bond, I bet he's thinking of his post LUCIFER career and going for something in one of the bigger franchises (like a Marvel movie, maybe), but honestly...I think he'd make for a great Bond.

I don’t subscribe to this idea that whoever plays Bond next needs to “bulk up.” I think it worked for Craig’s iteration of Bond - and I’ll concede may have been necessary given his slight stature - but it is by no means required. Bond is not a superhero. Cast a 6 ft or taller actor who is slim and athletic and there’s no need for him to look like a body builder.

I agree with the proviso that he be convincing in action scenes. Bond doesn’t need to be a superhero but he needs to have the grace of a natural athlete.

You need to believe that he can fight. That was one of my major gripes with Pierce Brosnan...he was never convincing in hand to hand fights. I'm also pretty sure that his slight build is why they turned every one of his action sequences into a bullet storm.

Pierce’s hand-to-hand stuff in Goldeneye was pretty good. But yes, as he aged he did not stay particularly fit and they avoided making him fight. But Pierce was at no time less convincing as a man of action than Connery in DAF or Roger at any point. :))

I also think that even a bulked-up Craig is a lot smaller than many people realize. They can do magical things with the camera.

You don't need to be built like the Incredible Hulk to look good in a fight scene. It certainly helps and adds credibility to appear fit and today's audiences expect that from action heroes. What you really need, especially with Bond, is excellent fight choreography (that also reflects a high level of realism and brutality), great cinematography and a Bond actor who has the athleticism to pull it off. The bar is set very high for fight scenes in Bond films. I don't think there is a Top 10 Movie Fights list anywhere that doesn't include the train fight in FRWL.

Agree. However standards and expectations of masculinity have changed and Craig is a big part of that. Over compensating like mad to be sure but part of his legacy may be redefining the Blueprint. Discuss.

Holy cow, I never thought of that. That's a pretty good theory.

My wife loves Tom Ellis, and there is no doubt the man has charm and can act. He singlehandedly carries Lucifer which would be a pretty horrible show without him.

His time may have passed though.

As for the issue of muscled-up masculinity, I think it’s highly likely the next Bond actor will feel the need to bulk up. Standards have changed.

That said, you’ve got to hand it to Pattinson for not getting massive to play Batman, a literal superhero. So it can be done that way.

I think it's enough for a Bond actor to look lean and fit. Bond likes swimming, running and skiing. He should be buildt like an athlete in one of those sports.

You're right, Bond should probably be a little more muscled than a swimmer or runner. But I think Craig went too far in CR.

I think whoever plays Bond next will undoubtedly be in great shape. Do they have to be as bulked up as Craig was in Casino Royale? absolutely not. Brosnan in GE was the exact build and weight as Flemings Bond if I remember correctly and he still received enough flak for being too skinny that he gained weight for TNDs. And that was long before the crazy social media fitness culture so audiences now are more aware then ever of an actors build.

    I always thought Lucky Vanous was pretty spot on;

I do appreciate in today's world of Marvel, the audience expect to see more of a superhero physique and DC has catered for that, but I prefer the more realistic inconspicuous literary physique for Bond.

I've heard cross-country skiing athletes have on average the highest lung capasity among athletes. A few years ago Peter Northug was maybe the best male cross country skier in the world (later he has last his way :# ) and at the time this photo was taken he was probably at peak fitness. I wouldn't mind if Bond looked along these lines, only with a bit more body fat. (any recent rumours about my sexual orientation are unfounded :)) )

Morph all three and I think we have our next James Bond! Heck, Peter Northug even has a bit of Hoagy Carmichael about him..!

Pains me to say as a Sarnian...he was taking the piss making us believe Superman could come from Jersey, Bond would be too much...but Cavill will be great if he gets it, he wants it so much, I just believe he'd give it everything...a;though he may or may not be about to ruin Holmes so I reserve the right to deny I ever wrote this!

I suspect that Cavill is just fine in that new Holmes movie. He's probably a very minor role, anyways.

Even then, he's got major heat on him lately. THE WITCHER was a huge hit, and he knows how to keep himself 'hot' on social media. The fact that he's a massive gamer in real life has tremendous appeal to the young crop out there.

I suspect you're correct....and yes the gamer love is real. How he carried that into The Witcher speaks really well to his eye for the details, another plus for Bond.

Although having re-watched Man from UNCLE again recently I hope they hire Armie Hammer as his stylist! :))

Just to play devil's advocate a bit: is the blindingly handsome, square jawed / cleft chin Cavill a bit too perfect for Bond? So perfect, that for contemporary audiences he would come off as "generic" or too "Hollywood" especially given Cavill's propensity to come off a bit "wooden".
  • nobodynobody Posts: 110MI6 Agent
That's the way I feel about him.

I'd be ok with Cavill as Bond. I think the writers would need to really lay on the cold blooded assassin angle to compensate.

Wooden is harsh...I think that's the mould for Superman. Night Hunter, Sand Castle and other bits have shown he's got chops.

I continue to think Charlie Hunnam might get the nod, although I do believe they will go with a “non-white” actor next tome around...
  • HowardBHowardB USAPosts: 2,736MI6 Agent
Hunnam is 41, although he appears younger. Hunnam looks like a younger, taller, less craggy, more classically handsome version of
Craig. IMO, age not withstanding, I don't know if Hunnam has the screen presence or charisma for Bond.
  • Number24Number24 NorwayPosts: 21,699MI6 Agent
Hunnan seems like a younger, lesser Craig. I also think the voice of Bond is important and Hunnan's voice is to high pitched.
  • emtiememtiem SurreyPosts: 5,686MI6 Agent
Hunnam always feels like a bit of a charisma failure whenever I see him onscreen.
Good call though, I'm sure he'd be on the list of candidates.

I have sat on my opinion about Cavill for awhile. I think he was an okay Superman, should have named the movie Okayman. He was good in MI 75 or whatever it was. I honestly would be very disappointed if he became Bond. I thought I was upset when Craig was named Bond, but Cavill as Bond would almost make me not wanna watch his version, though I would. I just don't enjoy his talent. I have tried too.

Yes I don't see Cavill as having 'it', although to be fair he was decent in Fallout.

I'd fully support Cavill in the role if it went to him...but then I still fancy Tom Hiddleston as well. I'm genuinely curious to see who gets it. Probably no one on the radar :007)

I'm hoping it's a (mostly) unknown guy without any big roles or name.
