I've just read my first "James Bond" novel, the first in the series by Ian Fleming. I would like to get everyone's thoughts on the work. I found it quite entertaining and full of suspense especially during the Baccarat scene. I'll be looking forward to everyone's thoughts.

Selon-moi, a fabulous novel. I loved the crisp prose and endless flow of exciting situations, notably the card games and torture scene.

If I had to criticise it, I'd say the pacing was slightly off in the last quarter. Fleming almost pulls off the fake crescendo and surprise ending but not quite.

But that's a minor criticism. One of the best genre novels of the late 20th Century.

Towards the end I became quite nervous that the book would turn too "mushy" having been quite comfortable with the "hard" Bond. When I came to the surprise ending I must say that I was pleasently surprised.

    Welcome to the site LeChiffre.

Casino Royale is a great read, and is certainly one of my favourites of all the novels.

You may be interested in reading the articles about the novels that are available here at ajb.

I hope you are going to read more of the novels, they really add to a greater understanding of the worlds most popular and suave secret agant. :)

I've always thought that Bond's "mushy" relationship w/Vesper in the first novel effectively explains why Bond is so hard and calloused in his relationships with women. Vesper really hurt Bond when he was greener which would probably be harder to communicate if they filmed a faithful adaptation of it now after 40 years of womanizing (especially post-Tracy, Fiona, Helga, Paris and Elektra.)

Wow. I was browsing through my old posts. It's funny to see this now that what seemed like a "dream" in 2003 is now a reality today. I never thought of a "reboot" idea with a new actor playing Bond back then. EON did it and, as we all know, it worked.
