First Casino Royale TV Spot

The first tv spot for casino royale aired about 10 minutes ago during the first commercial break for ABC's hit show LOST. This is great marketing by Sony becuase this show is one of the highest rated in America. It was about 30 seconds worth of the new trailer material ending like the trailer did with the car crashing.

Sweet! That means we'll get to see it this weekend during NFL games. Yahoo!

Welllll, the commercial wasn't that great. We got much of the same footage we've seen in the trailer, which is fine; but I had problems with the voiceover work. "Every legend has a beginning. . ." (or something like that) was used in the promos for The Phantom Menace (and look how THAT turned out!), and I almost gagged when I heard, "See how James--became BOND!" Say what? Wouldn't "See how Bond became 007" make more sense? Ah, well, at least the PR machine is roaring right along. . .

Agreed. The lack of voiceover has worked rather well up to now; pity they felt they had to resort to it at this point.

Haven't seen the spot yet, but I'm naturally looking forward to it. It's time we had some on TV.

I would of thought Sony would air TV spots during the Baseball playoffs also. Maybe they're waiting for the World Series. I also saw the TV spot earlier. It was nice, but nothing exciting.

You're right that it makes no sense but I got a big rush of excitement when I heard that line. I don't know why, as it is completely illogical, but when I heard that line I found myself putting all of my complaints, fears and concerns aside and getting really excited for CR's release! :007)

I was really hoping they weren't going to push the 're-boot' concept in so obvious a manner. Admittedly, a TV spot doesn't give time for subtlety, but this seems spot seems like a real sell-out to me. A 'Bond begins' concept is really only good for one movie. To me, if there telling me that's all the movie has going for it, I'll become really worried.

    The voiceover is terrible.

That's all I have to say about it.

My real preference would have been for no voice over, but maybe a little recutting to have the remark about the short life expectancy of 007 come first. Perhaps a written "Every story has a beginning ..." introduction. I think that would have made the point. Then let the images speak for themselves.

But really, I'm not going to sit around and pick apart the publicity. Eon's done pretty well over the last 40 years so that's one thing we should be able to trust them on, whether we like the idea of Craig/CR or not.

Then again, what the hell? What else are we going to do for the next 5-6 weeks?

It's interesting, they're definitely downplaying the action element this time. Very classy and classic shots if somewhat static. It's probably for the best to downplay it and people will know going in this is more about a real story, and the action is the bonus.

Thanks Ben (doubt I'd pay $40 for them though...)

I got to watch this ad on a 60 inch widescreen HDTV so i noticed some rather intresting alterations or modifications in some of the shots which focused on DC as compared to the regular worldwide trailer. DC facial cuts appeared to be digitally clean.

Funny...I also saw it at a friend's house on a big HDTV screen. :) Craig did look "cleaner". But I remained quiet and watched the group's reaction to the new Bond film. Some of the women in our group were aghast that there was a new actor and cringed (I guess they just forgot about the new casting). Those who recognized Craig noticed the digital enhancements. But I think the real problem is the marketing. What's with the voice-over "See how James--became BOND!" It generated a big laugh from my friends. It's unintentionally comical and implies that "Bond" is a magical state of being or some sort of super-hero status. One of the guy's in the group said something like, "What is this, a comic book origin story?" Sony/Eon seems to be clueless on how to present this film to the public.

High Guard, if you have no plans to see Casino Royale, then why are you posting in the forum dedicated to it? There's 10 other forums on this board - plenty of space to go play in, so why not stay in there? Quite frankly, your boundless negativity and harping is not only becoming very tiresome, but seeing that you've taken on the voice of North America and are declaring the masses are "against" this film, you also sound plain ludicrous.

Everyone is within their right to be critical and, as long as it's not aggressive, negative, of the way the film is progressing and the film itself. But if you're coming here to bash it for bashing it's sake, then just don't. Go join some board like Craignotbond or whatever, and leave us in peace to actually be objective about the piece, OK?

Christianne, I have to say that I've noticed you come here only to criticise Casino Royale. Are you even a Bond fan? You've shown no evidence of it so far. I think it's safe to say that people pay absolutely no attention whatsoever to anything you've got to say these days anyway.

I dunno, seems the overwhelming majority of fansite responses are very positive, so at least EON/Sony are making Bond fans happy...well, most of them anyway.

As for the general public, there's just as much (if not more so) anecdotal positive feedback as anecdotal negative feedback, also the two mostly positive test screening reviews...but we really won't know the final verdict on that front till November, will we? Until then, I suppose one person's opinion of how CR will fair is as valid as another's. Sure seems like there's some positive buzz forming out there, but maybe it's just how I choose to see things.

Really Moonraker. You have almost ran every-one off who has been critical of the movie.

There are plenty of people on this forum that are critical of aspects of the movie. That includes me (don't like the latest posters, don't like the theme tune, still uneasy about the reboot idea), and still includes quite a few people, the majority in fact, in varying degrees, including some people who I count as friends. It also makes a change, I've been accused in the past of just the opposite by some people. As I said, there's nothing wrong with criticism and negativity within reason. But you don't seem interested in talking about anything other than bashing the film, making groundless sweeping statements, and hoping those who are looking forward to it end up "hurt".

You haven't seen the film. How can your sweeping criticism actually be completely objective? I'm not on any side - I might hate Casino Royale, or I might love the film and dislike Craig as Bond. I don't know, because, you know what? I've not seen the film yet. I'll go and base my decisions on when I see it. As I said above, there are some people on here who bring up incredibly valid, thoughtful critical points - then there are those who are just out to trash it. You showed your true colours when you said you "couldn't wait for Nov 17th so that some people get hurt" when CR fails at the box office. Really, that's just not criticism - it's immature, spiteful and nasty.

As for having something against Americans... How did you get that? I said "speaking for North America is ludicrous", which it is - there's over 300m people in North America (which includes Canada, by the way) and I'm guessing not all of them agree with you.

I actually really don't. You know I'm not keen on the US 1-sheet, but they were going somewhere with that idea. This one, I'm not quite sure what it's trying to portray at all. I don't think it's a particularly classy pose of James Bond (as opposed to, say, the Entertainment Weekly pose, or the the still from the trailer with the machine gun) and I just don't get any feel from it. A cold blue background and a few pictures of Bond as if they've been rattled off on a catwalk... I think it lacks imagination and flare. Actually, the more I think about it, the more I'm wondering if it's just that pose I don't like - it's not a particularly elegant one.

For a banner style ad, the one at Cannes (without the overexposed eyes) was more effective, to be honest. Nothing has yet topped the teaser poster, though.

And on the subject of the TV Spot, which I haven't actually commented on yet - why that hideous voiceover?? Why, why, why, why, WHY??

No wonder now all we mostly have here is a Bond loving Flower family..excuse me. Just as a side note your condescending attitude is also very tiring and offensive too. Why dont you go ahead change you slogan on the mainpage and declate this forum as one Happy Carebear Family.

On the off-chance that High Guard should return, or to those who would agree with what he's written here, let me say this:

This is one of the most unfair and wrong-headed things I've ever read, directed both at Moonraker 5 and at AJB. No one has been run off this site for criticizing either Casino Royale or Craig--and, as Moonraker 5 observes, both he and the rest of the admin staff have heaped both derision and praise on what is developing with the film. Those who have been "run off" fit into one category: obnoxious jerks who feel it is their God-given right to cram their opinions down other peoples' throats and/or to heap derision on the opinions of others. We've been equal-opportunity banishers, giving the boot both to one lout who wouldn't stop posting nasty photoshopped images of Craig and to another who routinely derided critics of Craig as being in love with Brosnan who were not "true" Bond fans.

And AJB being a "Flower family" or, worse yet, a "Happy Carebear Family?" There has never been a day when I've been on the site where someone hasn't disagreed--often passionately--with another person. However, it wouldn't cross my mind, or, most likely, the mind of any other mod, to ban the person. So long as disagreements are kept civilized and the tone of the message is respectful, people may say what they like here.

Last of all, we do ask that people who choose to post in this particular forum at least keep an open mind toward Casino Royale. All we've seen of it are trailers and some images, and we've heard the theme song. Otherwise, the movie hasn't even been released yet. If, after you've seen it, you want to come here and talk about what an enormous pile of crap it is, fine; but to come here at this time just to pee all over a movie you have no intention of seeing, especially when you think that everyone who does plan to see it is an idiot, serves no other purpose but to stir up anger and resentment. If you don't want to see CR, don't see it--but please don't abuse the rest of us for wanting to see it.

    Rant over. Thanks for reading.

    Point well taken, Hardy.

Now, I saw the ad and thought it was fine. I didn't find the whole "how James became Bond" line funny at all, because the voiceover emphasized his name in a way that clearly made a distinction between some chap we simply call "James" and the guy we unmistakably know as "Bond." Did they "clean up" Craig? I honestly didn't notice, but I might have seen a lower resolution image. "Cleaning up" an actor digitally is the new makeup and lighting anyway, so it wouldn't bother me.

I guess I understand why they used Movie Announcer Guy, but to me it seems like a hand overplayed---but obviously they want to sell the 'origin' thing aggressively...which isn't necessary, as the fact that it's a new Bond is more than enough for even the most casual fan.

Which is exactly why CBn has its (non deserved) reputation as banning those who don't like Craig purely for that opinion, which of course isn't true. It just so happens that the majority of people acting in an obnoxious fashion are those who dislike Craig; mainly because what they are saying is negative in tone and it's easy for negativity to become overwhelming and descend into out and out nastiness. That's not to say all people who don't like him are like that, but it's important to notice the difference.

The majority of those obnoxious are the anti-Craig? Of course, what constitutes being obnoxious is subjective. Whether or not yours is a true assessment, you are correct that not all the obnoxious posters are from the anti-Craig camp.

There's a series of commercials stateside, if memory serves correct for Geico car insurance, every take has a different celebrity and a regular customer sounding off, one of them has the "movie announcer guy" whose voice is unmistakable. Unfortunately this comedic bit reocurrs when I hear the CR TV spot.

"James becomes Bond!" is so darn tacky.
