What if Moonraker was scrapped totally?

Clearly MR is a much-debated over Bond film; the detractors are either unhappy because it is far removed from any Ian Fleming material, or they hate the whole science fiction/outer space thing altogether.

The pro-MR camp (of which I am a part) accept it as another escapist Bond outing and go with it. Personally I have no problems with the movie as its good popcorn fun. (And don't forget YOLT and DAF - they were over-the-top, too).

But I am curious to know: Eon intended to make FYEO right after TSWLM (it was even announced at the end of that film), so would you have liked to have MR 'purged' from the franchise and forgotten altogether, or not?

No! It's a fun movie and I couldn't use my "I'd rather see the gondola chase in St. Marks Square than the baffling ending in Casino Royale" argument!

The good thing about the Bond movies is that they are in most cases independent of each other. So if there is a movie that someone wishes to purge, he can do so without any ill effects. I have purged the movies I dislike from my "watch 'em again" list. Happily the number of Bond movies I like is greater than the those I have purged.

I dont feel that it should be, because MR was the highest grossing up until GE, this made the franchise popular, brought in new fans etc. If MR was not done then I would say the same for the others that I dont like.

Moonraker isn't that bad, its just the outer space thing.

The only real reason why they did MR was because of the whole star wars space facination, and it was a success, it did not bomb. Its almost like DAD apart from the fact MR would be more popular, its one of the most successful, despite the fact its the worst.

I am a fan of MR if you cant tell :D

I don't think any Bond film should be scrapped. Well, yes, there are one or two Bond films which I wouldn't mind being purged but MR isn't one of them. Apart from the second half, I think it's a really good film. I would hate for it to be scrapped because I have alot of fun whenever I watch MR and I think there are several Bond films which are far worse. (I would argue that AVTAK, TLD, LTK and DAD are greatly inferior, and if any Bond film should be scrapped it should be one of them.)

For me Moonraker is pure escapist fun. Personally I think it is a great watch and contains some of my favourite scenes and lines. The hunting scene springs to mind. 'You missed, Mr. Bond', 'did I?' Brilliant!

I am also of the opinion that Bond today would not be the same without all the previous enstallments. So I for one would not purge Moonraker

But if MR were purged, we'd be having a discussion about whether FYEO should be wiped from the canon. The film following TSWLM was going to be absolutely in the same vein; no-limits entertainment. They might have drawn the line at the space shuttles, but they would probably still have included Jaws, the double taking pigeon, the circus freefall, etc.

Besides, going so completely over the top with MR allowed them to return to earth, literally, with FYEO. They purged it from their system and started again.

Personally I find MR to be great entertainment; not necessarily a great Bond film, but it's fun, it makes me laugh, and Holly Goodhead and Hugo Drax are both extremely underrated as far as I'm concerned. I wouldn't purge it at all.

I don't believe that any of the Bond films should be purged or scrapped......even though I am seriously tempted by the thought of scrapping the Jaws/Dolly romance from MR. The Bond films are what they are, warts and all. That's the way they should remain.

Scrapping an entire film? That's a bit extreme from my point of view. There certainly are parts in some of the films that should have been scrapped, but not entire films.

What? And erase one of the best Bond films ever? Unthinkable!:o

It's not bad,but it's not good, the whole story line is just unbeleivable, most the Bond films you could actually see happenning.

I've erased it from my personal viewing list. Like all the Moore films, it added nothing to the series. It merely occupied a space until James Bond could return in earnest when Dalton Assumed the role.

I could say the same thing about the Dalton films. ;) That is, they 'merely occupied a space until James Bond could return in earnest' when Brosnan assumed the role. :p
