Jack Davenport must be next

Hope hope Daniel Criag stays on for at least 2 more films. But what of the next Bond? The answer is Jack Davenport. Great brittish actor who'd be able to keep that killer look & emotional side that Dalton, Brosnan & Craig have carried so well. Plus the man looks how Bond should.

Blimey ... let DC enjoy his tenure a little more.

I think the difficulty with someone like Jack Davenport - much as I like him and would like to see him as Bond - is that fact that he would lead the franchise back to the super suave 007. It seems clear that the movie-going public like a Bond with more "grit". Either way, a long way to go yet.

ps And before anyone thinks that there should be a thread dedicated to each potential candidate, there won't be. The mods will close 'em.

Perhaps we should have a thread dedicated to possible post-Craig candidates.

One Bond at a time, please :)) :))

I don't really know Davenport. I think the Craig experience demonstrates there's really no such thing as how Bond "should" look (within reason, of course). Davenport looks fine, but so do dozens of other actors, both known and not so well-known. What's far more important, and Craig has demonstrated this as well, is that whoever plays him to be an actor who understands the character, or at least has a well-rounded conception of what he wants character the character to be and that his concept fits with the filmmakers'. You just can't tell that from a picture. Craig on the page looked all wrong. On the screen it's another story.

I'm going to have to say no to Davenport. I don't really like his voice, and I think the voice is very important. It needs to be something commanding, something as dangerous as it is refined. Davenport's is refined, but there's not an ounce of danger there.

Not really sure who should be next. IMO, they have the perfect guy right now. Bale would be great, but he's already Batman/Bruce Wayne.

The voice has little to do with it. It's the script that counts. Remenber Lazenby?

I haven't seen Henry Cavill in anything yet, but based on the word on his screentest he will be Bond-in-waiting for years. You know, like Dalton and Brosnan was. I don't think Craig will be in much more than three Bond films. Cavill will be more or less 30 by then. We can't possibly know who else will be considered when the time comes, but if nothing extra happens (superstardom, linked to other action franchise, health problems) he will be a major contender.

If Craig has the same contract that Brosnan had, he's held to three with an option for a fourth; that puts him in the role until at least 2012. A lot can happen in six years...

Please, no, let's not go back to catalog model for Bond. He should be be uniquely so -- I'd bet if you dumped a box of photos on a desk of Bond wannabes, there'd be hundreds of guys that look like this actor. Let this guy be an extra, perhaps, or play a villain or be in a soap opera. Bond should be handsome, yes, but he should bring something individual to the role. This guy looks like the fellow who came with one of my picture frames.

Sorry - I just don't see it! There is nothing about Davenport that says "Bond" to me at all.

It's like some people think Hugh Grant would be great as Bond, or Ewan MacGregor, or Jude Law - I have seen nothing in any of these actors' performances so far that would be in any way suitable for Bond (except possibly "handsome").

On the other hand, I can see many Bond characteristics in each of the six actors who have played him thus far.

Davenport can do the David Schwimmer-style relationship screw-up as in "Coupling", the toffee-nosed brat as in "Pirates of the Caribbean", the floppy-haired gay choirmaster as in "Mr Ripley", but Bond?

    I think not.

But no one would have thought Daniel Craig a good choice for Bond after seing him in Tomb Raider?

I think the guy who takes over when Craig puts his tux away must be under 30 now. If he is olderhe will age too fast in the role. It's pretty much a given that Cavill's acting in the screentest was superb, but I agree he has to look more rugged to be Bond.

Davenport is too much of a posh boy. He's got star quality but for English guys he just smacks of the English upper class too much for Bond.

Speaking of Davenport, did anybody catch 'This Life +10' the other night? Can't quite believe its ten years since that show first aired. I like Davenport, but don't see him as a potential Bond.

I always liked Davenport and I thought he had potential but I have changed my mind recently and I dont think he would suit Bond at all.

Having sid that, Craig has proved that until you have seen them in the role who knows. Since Craigs arrival, all bets are off in terms of who will make a good Bond ...

( On a bit of a tangent ... I saw that other potenial Bond candidate Dougray Scott recently in Desperate Housewives. I am so glad he didn't get the nod over Craig, not my cup of tea at all.)

I like Jack Davenport in Coupling on the BBC. Outside this I find him absolutely charmless. I think he is the only bad thing about Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl. I think he is just better suited to television work.

I think that Daniel Craig should be kept for 4-6 films. If for any reason Daniel Craig were to leave in the next couple of years, I would like to see Damien Lewis take over. Obviously he would have to dye those ginger locks.

Not a Damien Lewis fan? What is it about him you don't like?

Surely instead of just attacking my OPINION you should at least state why you personally wouldn't like to see him as Bond. ;)

Totally agree. Dougray Scott would have been a dreadful Bond. The guy is so wooden he's practically a tree.

However, Damian Lewis would be interesting. Played a secret agent in 'Stormbreaker,' and as for his ginger hair, well he died it brown for 'Band of Brothers,' so I am sure he could do it again. Also he read the Bond novels on BBC radio last year with some style. But have to say I'm very happy to have Craig playing Bond for as long as possible. :007)

I agree with you about Craig but I also agree with you about Lewis. I have always liked him. I saw him in a non acting role recently presenting 'Have I Got News For You'. He was quite entertaining and held his own very well. The subject of Bond came up and he even managed a joke with 'Bond,Ginger Bond'. One thing he has over other potential Bond actors is that he did actually attend Eton.

But back to Jack Davenport ...

;) Fair enough, just yanking your chain a little - sorry about that.

Damien Lewis is certainly a good actor, but he doesn't remotely fit the part IMO. He's neither good looking, nor rugged, just a little odd and even geeky looking. He's got that concieted public school thing that hugh grant has (who BTW would be wrong also). Bond never really fitted into public school because it was full of Damien Lewises and Hugh Grants. Obviously having never met these men i only speak of what they project onscreen - but this is quite important, particuarly for the Bond role.

Fair play, no need to apologise, it's all in good fun!

I wouldn't have considered Damien Lewis either until I watched Band of Brothers. He is really quite excellent in it. If you haven't seen it I would recommend you watch it, not just to see Damien Lewis but also it is a brilliant mini-series.

Damien Lewis will be a too old when Craig quits, he will be past 40. He would also have to dye his hair to brown. Other than that he could possibly be a great Bond.

I don't think it's a good idea to jump to that sort of conclusion about Jack Davenport. Remember how many had jumped to conclusions about Daniel Craig? We don't really know what kind of Bond that Davenport would make.

Why would he have to dye his hair? Craig didn't.
Depends on the conclusion -- many of us correctly predicted that Craig would make a fantastic, masculine Bond that would help reinvigorate the Bond film series.

Not necessarily. I correctly predicted that Craig would make a less than ideal Bond who would not be nearly as good as Connery, Moore or Brosnan. :p ;)
