Ultimate Edition DVDs - new releases?

Hey guys, new to the site and desperate for an answer to a question regarding the Ultimate Edition DVDs.

According to play.com, a NEW batch of Ultimate Edition DVDs is set for release in March. You can even pre-order them from play. Does anyone know if these are any different from the current Ultimate Edition discs? I notice play.com were selling them at 2-for-1 a few weeks back, which they usually do to get rid of stock before new releases. I'm planning on replacing my SE discs with the UE discs but I'll hold off if they are about to release a new set with different covers or something. Can anyone shed light on this please?

Sorry if this has already been covered on the board but I did a quick search and couldn't find any reference to it.

I don't know anything about this new batch you mentioned, but as you'll probably know, there have already been two different versions of the ultimate editions released. The first having the embossed slip-cases, and the second wave having the plain cases, but with the shiny silver 007 logo. This third batch you mention is probably just another wave released to coincide with the DVD release of Casino Royale. I can't find any mention of this release you mention though. I wonder if it is a blu-ray release of the UE DVDs?

Wow, thanks for the quick response! Here's the play.com page for pre-orders, if it helps...

Mmm... The list of extras appears identical. i can't imagine what the difference is then. Maybe they will have different cover art or something?? I still think it's to tie in with the CR DVD release.

They've got me puzzled this time!!

The only difference in the listings is that the current ones have "two discs" in brackets afterwards and the March release ones don't. But they couldn't get all that on one disc, surely?

Also, I read somewhere that Roger Moore did commentary for his films on the UE discs, is that right?

That is absolutely right - and very good the commentaries are too. He does tend to get a little side tracked but they are entertaining to listen too. They're what makes buying the UEs for the Moore films worthwhile really.

I'll bet the clean-up helps though. I've resisted the UE discs up til now but my flatmate brought home Goldfinger last night and the picture and sound quality blew me away. I can't help myself now, I must have them!

The clean-ups a great, I didn't think they could pull much more data from the SE release, but now I can safely say that, thanks to the latest in cutting-edge technology, they can present Roger Moore's liver spots and Timothy Dalton's acne scars in unsurpassed detail.

Haha, yeah I think it's things like that have me dragging my heels on getting HDTV, I like the illusion.

I have only seen the UEs in cases of five each, organized with no rhyme or reason, which I must assume is to thwart people who only want the run of a certain actor. I am wondering if with the new releases I can just buy the ones I want...I actually only need to own maybe my top ten.

But I have been renting the UEs, and they are beautiful, sounds are nice. Though of course, when they do something like this it reveals the limitations of special effects all the more. Not that I really care; I'm there for the story, I dont mind noticing the occasional blue screen.

I now own volumes 1 and 3, but the news about another batch has me shaking my head. These box sets cost a lot of money and I am going to keep the two volumes I now own. I don't care if the volumes of 2 and 4 are the older or newer batch, I am just going to get whatever I can.

I heard that current DVDs will work on HD DVDs. Is this true? I hope because this is costing a lot of money.

I have the whole ultimate edition set with the cool as breifcase, getting the UEs is worth it, but Im not sure if you already own ALL of the SE's.

The special features are good, there are more deleted scenes etc.

But alot is recycled from the SE versions.

I bought the UE without thinking because I had them all on VHS and about 5 of my favs on SE DVD.
    1. TWINE 2. FYEO 3. MR 4. TLD 5. TSWLM 6. OHMSS 7. DN 8. OP 9. AVTAK 10. TMWTGG 11. QoS 12. GE 13. CR 14. TB 15. FRWL 16. TND 17. LTK 18. GF 19. SF 20. LaLD 21. YOLT 22. NTTD 23. DAD 24. DAF. 25. SP

    "Better make that two."

I own all the SEs, but received Volume 1 of the UEs for Christmas...the picture quality is improved from the SEs which is definitely more noticable on the older films. I'm also a big fan of the slimmer cases, so it's not far fetched for me to think I'll purchase the other UE volumes.

I have all of the SE dvd's, but I finally decided to get a UE volume last night. I bought volume 2, and I have to say that the picture/sound is a lot better. I am definitely happy with the purchase, and will be buying the rest as the money comes.
