Second Casino Royale DVD

scottmu65scottmu65 Carlisle, Cumbria, UKPosts: 402MI6 Agent
So I was reading an article over at Commander Bond Network about MArtin Campbell hinting a return to the James Bond franchise, in this article he mentioned that a second Casino Royale DVD will be relased, featuring commentaries, and possibly deleted scenes etc.

So I was wondering, will this new DVD be part of the Ultimate Edition collection or will it simply be a special edition release?

Sorry if this has been discussed before.

It hasn't been discussed before, but it's no surprise that Sony & Co. are looking to get a little more money out of us. Really, I don't even understand why the current DVD needed a second disc--the three documentaries and multiple trailers (for every EON film but CR) could easily have fit with the film on a single disc. This new edition better be well worth the money!

Well...one certainly didn't need a crystal ball to see this one coming X-(

Of course I'll buy the one with the commentary tracks---hopefully Craigger will have one as well, along with Campbell and the producers, as one of my favourite aspects of the DAD DVD was Brozzer's commentary; very interesting and often quite funny...

And---having read the script before seeing the film---I'd like to see deleted scenes like the cricket match, alternative scenes with deleted dialogue, etc...

The studios do it again ... And I and thousands of others, of course, will bend over for them. :D

In a way this is quite good. Thanks to MGM, I've bought all the other films twice on DVD; this means I will be able to maintain two complete collections 8-)

I haven't bothered buying the first DVD release for this reason. Not much of fan am I? ;)

I received my copy of the Casino Royale DVD on Saturday and of course I am delighted to have this fantastic Bond movie to watch at home on DVD (and a legal one!)

However, the extras are disappointing (but these are secondary to the movie itself). Although, the thing that really bugs me is the fact that the DVD lacks an audio commentary. As someone with a deep interest in how films are made, I find commentaries a fantastic way of learning something of the film making process. The men who made it are actually talking you through the experience and are relating to the film in real time, the same as you the viewer are. It really is a wonderful tool.

As much as I despise this tactic of giving us the fans a taste but still wanting more from the DVD, I am nonetheless delighted to hear that Campbell will be doing a commentary at some point. I will certainly purchase the improved DVD if and when it comes out. I am no memorabilia collector, but I do like to have the best possible DVD of the Bond films.

But why buy the DVD - why not wait for the better one? Or just rent the DVD from the local Blockbuster... how many times are you gonna see it in the next year?

Not that I encourage criminality, but this is one reason why some might buy pirate DVDs.

Then again you can always flog the first one on eBay I suppose.

To be honest, it really is no wonder that piracy is so rife. If the studios are blatantly ripping us all off with 2 or 3 editions of the same film, then what goes around comes around. They can shove their second edition where it don't shine.

I won't be buying it again. I've not bought the UEs either, and I've no intention to - certainly not new, perhaps at some point in the distant future second-hand on eBay.

That is almost certainly what I will do when the second edition comes out.

But then the film itself would have to be more compressed, resulting in poorer picture quality.

The first disk came out today in the UK. I think I'm gonna wait for what presumably will be The Ultimate Edition.

Wish I had the patience to wait until the 'better' one comes out...but I don't :s

So, I will buy the Extra Super-Duper-Special Ultra-Deluxe Edition when it's available, and either sell the first version...or give it to my Dad, who doesn't give a s**t about special features...

I just posted this on another thread, but looking at this one it seems more at home, here...

Random Irritations about the Casino Royale DVD (UK Version)

    1) The Anti-Piracy adverts. "You wouldn't steal a car, etc" Is it just me, or does anyone else find this patronising bile highly annoying? I've just spent the best part of £15 on the proper article, if you want to target the people that do buy these rubbish copies, then hang around in a London pub at any weekend. The biggest irritation is that this wonderful 'request' for me not to download or buy poor quality movies is that I can't even skip it!

    2) Trailers for other films. By all means shove this rubbish on the copies meant for rental, but leave them off the copy that I've privately purchased for my own use, please. I have no desire to see clips from Emma Thompson's or Will Smith's latest DVD Offerings, nor am I the slightest bit interested in Spiderman Bloody III.

    3) Special Features? My arse. No director commentary, no deleted scenes, just a couple of average documentaries that I'd seen before. And I'm sorry, but that Maryam D'Abo documentary on the Bond girls of the past is quite frankly, rubbish.

    4) Product placement in my DVD cover. Leaflets from Virgin, some place in the Bahamas etc, all rammed in my copy, but no decent 'Bond' insert?

With that rant over, I saw the movie itself twice at the cinema in November and was looking forward to seeing it again. I wasn't disappointed. It's a teriffic Bond film and Daniel Craig is truly the real deal as 007.

Just a shame I feel slightly done with what's on offer on the DVD

Casino Royale the Movie - 8/10

Casino Royale the DVD - 3/10 Must try harder. But I'm sure they will just before the release of Bond 22 when they try and fleece me to buy a 'New' Casino Royale DVD.

    Well, they can poke it....

Here's an idea, then. Why not put everything on the first release? I wouldn't even mind paying a little bit more than usual, but no, some wise, rich studio executive always sees a way for more money to be wrung out of fans.

Lucas got away with it with Star Wars for years. "Special Edition, Special Collectors Edition, Special Edition that you haven't got yet but I need a few more pounds edition etc.

It's a liberty and a ****-take, but while people keep buying them, the corporations will keep churning them out.

Sony, You got my ten quid for the cinema release and I've just given you another twelve for the DVD. All I ask is that I get the copy that I deserve....

I have to agree that the DVD release does seem like a bit of a half-hearted offering. But, it was a quick release only 5 months after the film was released so getting people back for commentaries etc. may have bben a problem.

That said, I would have been willing to wait a few more months for the full edition to be released.

I felt the EXACT same! When I saw "trailers" I thought it would be CR trailers! I'm glad to have the film, but how ridiculous! These days we're bombarded with adverts at the cinema as well! Terrible...

If folks didn't want the film so bad (I hear the DVD sales are pretty good), then EON would take more time and do it up right the first time. From their POV, I can totally understand rushing out an initial DVD, because the market is waiting for it with open wallets, then getting around to a better version when they can. Supply and demand.

Is it too late to start a boycott the DVD website?

    Bit harsh, mate.

I wanted the film just like anyone else, and I waited until it was properly and legally available.

My minor gripe (And that's all it is, a minor gripe) is that it could have been a whole lot better.

No complaints about the film at all, just thought the overall DVD release was shoddy.

But then, isn't everything these days?
  • bluemanblueman PDXPosts: 1,667MI6 Agent
Sorry, wasn't trying to be harsh, just sounded like folks are real unhappy, put me in mind of another great unhappiness. Believe me, I'd much prefer one DVD with everything on it. I learned long ago to take what I can get out of EON, Hollywood, well just life in general.

As it is, getting the film on DVD now, and a gussied up version later, doesn't seem like much of a burden, IMHO. I admit, I like now a whole lot, and the film itself is what's the biggest "extra" for me.

I know this is going to sound so sad but the one I really want to see is the one on the drive to meet Mathis where James catches Vesper looking at him if it was filmed. IMHO even something so small and seemingly insignignifcant could have given a bit more depth to the love story.

I got the R1 release of Casino Royale on 2 DVDs from America last week and I am absolutely horrified at the poor quality of the picture. The opening and closing credit titles have noticible compression artifacts and the film itself appears soft. The sound is only DD5.1 and not DTS as recent releases have been. From what I've heard on the web, the Blu-ray version is pristine. It appears to me that Sony has deliberately degraded the DVD version to make the Blue-ray release seem so much better.
I have a 55" HD (720p) Sony rear projector and of all the DVDs I have seen (approx 2000) the previous James Bond movies (since 1997) are of reference quality. I use them to demonstrate what DVDs are capable of, both visually and audibly. I have seen in the shops side by side demos of DVD vs Blu-ray and frankly you have to look very closely to see any differences between two well mastered sources.
Has anyone else noticed how poor the quality of the DVD is?

Not sad at all. The bare bones love story is the only true weakness to "Casino Royale" -- about ten more minutes of development, including showing a more "fun" side to Vesper would have guaranteed not a dry eye in the house when the lights came up. As it stands, there's just enough to understand the love story but not quite enough to feel it with real depth.

A thing I'd dearly like to see is an expanded version of CR- not just the deleted scenes tacked on as a bonus feature but them actually ("Ectually" is not part of my vocabulary :p) incorporated into the movie a la Lord Of The Rings. So the movie ends up 3 hours long? Who cares? You're at home.

As tight as it is of the studio to do this, I really can't match the patience of some of you who say you'll "wait" for the next release.

Wait till god knows when to have Casino Royale on DVD? My Bond fandom really wouldn't allow me to do anything other than buy the DVD on its day of release, and, "if I deem it a prudent investment", the same will apply to any worthwhile subsequent releases.

I was able to hold out for the Extended versions of LOTR. Of course I had a little birdie tell me they were on their way. You can imagine my disappointment though in hearing about Casino Royale not being the definitive edition when I was two weeks away from getting it.
