Just wondering how many members of AJB are avid Floydian's such as myself.

IMO Pink Floyd is a masterpiece of a band. Their music is pure art, poetry in its greatest form.

I would rank my top 5 Floyd Album's as such:

1.The Wall (Genius story telling. Roger Waters revolutionized the concept album through this masterpiece.)
2.The Dark Side of the Moon(Most popular, but still amazing on its own merrit. best tracks are "Time" and "The Great Gig in the sky."
3.Wish You Were Here (A wonderful tribute to Syd Barret)
4.Meddle (Underrated. "Echoes" is a fantastic piece of music!)
5.Animals (More Roger Waters magic!)

Any other Floydian's out there, please share your thoughts...

    'Ow can you 'ave your pudding if you don't eat your meat? Love the Floyd, man, but I gotta disagree with your list a bit. I can't make up my mind whether Dark Side or Wish is the best Floyd album--all depends on which one I'm listening to--but I'll give third place to Syd Barrett's remarkable Piper at the Gates of Dawn, which I think is the greatest psychadellic album ever made. I agree with you about Meddle--a real gem--but I'd put The Wall at four or five. I also have a little fondness for A Saucerful of Secrets, perhaps because it's such an odd transition from Barrett to Waters.

    Right on, Hardyboy. I'm sure many Floydian's would disagree with my ranking The Wall at #1, and I thought about not putting it there for a long time, but The Wall has become a little obsession of mine lately. I've been listening to it frequently, studying it. Trying to decifer every little meaning and message. Reading what other people have to say about it. What can I say, it's my hobby as of late.
    I totally agree with you about Piper at the Gates of Dawn. It is definately one of the greatest psychadellic album's of all time. Haven't really listened to Saucerful of Secrets. I'll have to give it a try some time.

    Forgot to mention also, although I consider A Momentary Lapse of Reason a weak album, I absolutely love the song Learning to Fly. One of the Floyd's best singles by far.

    Count me in B-)

    The Wall came along when I was a senior in high school---I hadn't really been into Floyd prior to that; it was all REO Speedwagon, Cheap Trick, Kiss, Ted Nugent, Head East...pretty standard midwestern fare (although I was already big into the Beatles, Who and the Stones).

    But The Wall really made me sit up and take notice. I think the first time I heard that helicopter into to The Happiest Days of Our Lives, I was at a huge party---and needless to say, it was a pivotal moment.

    When I joined the service, and made it to Europe, I was exposed to a much broader palette of rock music, and soon came to appreciate The Dark Side of the Moon, Meddle, Animals...and, of course Wish You Were Here...but it wasn't until the late 80's that I started to dip into Early Floyd (Piper, Saucerful, etc).

    It't truly hard to pick a favourite Floyd. Wall is a sentimental favourite, but it's really hard to beat Wish and Moon for pure otherworldly transportation...

    My appreciation for Floyd also caused me to take many trips along with the Alan Parsons project whilst abroad...he was on all the jukeboxes where they served room-temperature cerveza in six-liter goblets---and people whose language I didn't yet speak came up to offer strange, tiny little bricks wrapped in tinfoil, in exchange for a squirt of sangria from my bota bag...

    I'm a big fan of Alan Parker's Wall film. **If** I'd ever done any recreational herbal experimentation, during my recklessly misspent youth, I'd have certainly watched that movie...dozens of times B-)

    My mind has changed a little concerning my top 5 Floyd albums over the past month or so. I would now rate revise my list as such:

    1.The Dark Side of the Moon (Cliche', but c'mon, Dark Side is the bomb!)
    2.Wish You Were Here (Shine On is AWESOME!)
    3.The Wall
    4.Animals
    5.The Piper at the Gates of Dawn (Just bought this on iTunes not long ago. Amazing album! RIP Syd Barrett!)

    I mentioned this in the "Last Event Attended" forum a few days ago, but here seems just as, actually more, appropriate. Last weekend I had the pleasure of attending the Australian Pink Floyd Show. All I can say is, it was an UNBELIEVABLE performance. These guys aren't just some Floyd cover band. They really know what they're doing, and the light show and graphics are INCREDIBLE. All Floydians out there, if possible, MUST SEE THIS SHOW! It will change your life!

    Ok just found this thread, and wanted to pin my colours to the mast so to speak. I've been a Pink Floyd fan since about 1971/72 when my elder brother played the album Meddle to me. Hooked instantly and I've been lucky to see them twice once at Bingley Hall Stafford on the Animals tour of 1977, and then at earls Court London in 1980 for the Wall Tour.

    Love especially Live at Pompeii, Animals, Darkside,

    Just grabbed the Darkside 5.1 PCM Blu Ray which is amazing on my surround system.

    When I saw them back in the day, you were treated to quadaphonic sound, and their concerts were a total assualt on all your senses. Greatest live band I've ever seen x 2.

    Another interesting thread in the last week from yesteryear re: music on ajb007, the other being ‘Other (non obvious) John Barry recommendations’. I’ll have to keep my eyes open for more gems that may be lurking in the archives.

    I’m definitely a Pink Floyd fan. The albums I have in my collection are Meddle, The Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Atom Heart Mother and The Wall (all on vinyl). The only other two Floyd albums I have are Echoes: The Best of Pink Floyd and the live album Pulse.

    I saw Pink Floyd live when they toured Australia in 1994/95 (can’t remember exactly) but I will say it was the best concert I have seen. Not that I’ve seen that many but it was sensational. Unfortunately Roger Water’s wasn’t there (as you all know they had been split for a number of years), however David Gilmour played brilliantly (as did the rest of the band) and in my opinion he (Gilmour) is one of the best guitarists I have ever listened to. For mine Gilmour is in the top five guitarists of all time along with Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix, Carlos Santana and Gary Moore. That’s subjective and each to their own as music is a very personal taste but that’s who I like. Probably a thread on that here somewhere?

    My favourite Floyd album is Wish You Were Here and my favourite song (on any of their albums) is Shine On You Crazy Diamond (all 9 parts). I just think it’s brilliant. Not far behind would be Echoes from Meddle and Comfortably Numb from The Wall.

    WE HAVE A PINK FLOYD THREAD!
    Brilliant, I've been a fan for many many years, saw them at earls court in London, they were promoting the division bell, but the second half of the show they played the entire dark side of the moon. The later live release of those shows Pulse remains one of my favourite albums, I also live the delicate sound of thunder. Studio albums I equally love are, dark side, the wall, wish you were here, a momentary lapse of reason and the division bell.
    Floyd are amazing live, the only recent band who even comes close are Muse, but so far Muse have never had a full size plane coming from the back of the auditorium and crashing into the stage of a mirrorball the size of a house or indeed derigible pigs!
    I also recommend dave gilmours "the island" album for lazy Sunday mornings... Love his sound, full live version of comfortably numb simply can't be beat. In fact sod it I'm putting it on now. -{

    Comfortably Numb is a fantastic song. Make sure you check out Benedict Cumberbacht singing it with Gilmour last year at the Royal Albert Hall.
    I have an odd taste in Floyd. Love Wall and Wish you were here.
    My true favourites are Moon, Endless River and Momentary Lapse of Reason.
    Best songs probably Us and Them and Learning to Fly.

    I'm liking the love for momentary lapse of reason, on the turning away is an awesome track, even better live.

    Love Gilmour is solo album rattle that lock is worth a listen as well. His voice still has it

    Yeah I gave that album a listen last year, he has still got it, just a shame, they never managed a fair well tour. Interesting bit of random trivia, the bass player who toured with them Guy Pratt, ran a pub with his wife which was my dad's local.

    I love On An Island and also the accompanying live material (Albert Hall and Gdansk)

    Echoes was amazing on that tour with Richard Wright (as well as Numb which sounded raw and dry due to the whole tour was him using his old Pompeii black Strat and no Chorus / Mistress FX)

    Love the guitar solo on live at Gdansk for a Great day of Freedom. Blistering stuff from Gilmour (though it was a little overdubbed in studio)

    Rattle That Lock was ok however I fully appreciate at DG's age that he has mellowed and simply enjoying himself. I was gutted as have never seen him live and when I flew over last year I unknowingly arrived in London the day after he played his final Rattle That Lock date at the Albert Hall. Im guessing that may have been my last chance now (going by the time elapsed between On An Island and Rattle)

    The Endless River was a nice surprise, though I did not like Polly's lyrics in the "Final" single. I loved how they used some of the old material like Richard Wright noodling on the Royal Albert Halls Organ donkeys years ago

    Such an amazing back catalogue with Floyd, and Gilmours playing is always a pleasure - every note is placed and phrased perfectly. My fave Guitarist by a mile

    Iam a huge radiohead fan, but live they are far more stripped down with regards lights, effects etc than Muse or pink Floyd or at least they were when I last saw them.

    Musically and direction Radiohead probably are the closest band to pink Floyd, both are true progressive. I was meaning stage shows when I likened Muse to them.

    I quite liked their latest efforts, A Moon Shaped Pool.

    Anyone who collects vinyl records should look into the 2016 reissues (180 gram) of all their albums on their 'Pink Floyd Records' label B-) All original packaging has been replicated - right down to the postcard inside Wish You Were Here, posters, etc. Remastered as well. Worth the money -{

    I'm not a massive Floyd fan but growing up, Wall was a massive influence for me. First the film, and then the album. I still love listening to it and I love the story with the descent into madness.

    Beyond that: Wish You Were Here has a place in my record collection with Welcome to the Machine being a particular favourite because of this clip...

    Does it come in a black plastic bag like the original? My mate always bought two LP's of any album he bought. One to play there and then, the other to keep in immaculate condition. I haven't a clue how much that album completely intact bought on the day of release is worth now.

    On the Animals tour of 1977 the first set was the complete Animals album, the second set the complete Wish You were here album with an encore of money.

    Yes - it comes in the black plastic...the reissued version is resealable :)
