All right. Hope Bloomberg is on the mark here. So it's a 50th Anniversary Bash after all. Hope that means B-) ...and not :#

I also like how they're forecasting an every-other-year turnaround on future Bonds...if I were throwing money into a reanimated corpse like MGM, I'd want guarantees of a regular revenue stream as well...

MI6 is running the story as well: http://www.mi6.co.uk/news/index.php?itemid=9040&t=mi6&s=news

    Thought this was interesting, though:

"New James Bond films may be released every second year starting in November 2012, MGM said. It aims to own 50 percent of Bond 23, due out that year, with an equal partner paying all of the production costs, it said. Later Bond movies would be wholly owned and funded by MGM, the company said.

"Two potential suitors for Bond 23 financing and distribution are Paramount and Sony.

"Spyglass chiefs Gary Barber and Roger Birnbaum, who will be taking charge of production at MGM as part of the restructuring deal, are close to Paramount who co-funded the smash-hit "Star Trek" reboot.

"Sony distributed the last two James Bond outings under the agreement reached when the company was part of the consortium that took over MGM in 2005. It now owns a 14% stake. Sony have made it public that they would love to be involved again, but it looks like a bidding war between rival distributors will be taking place before Bond 23 is officially green-lit."

My (former) colleagues at Bloomberg are never wrong on this type of thing, I can witness having been there for almost 7 years. Financial details reported on Bloomberg are always accurate, to the penny. Anyhow it's been reported by the major Hollywood news sites, too now. Quoting the Bloomberg story, obviously. Even E!Online just broke the story. Whether this means it will be easy, I'm not sure. But it sure is much better news than having the franchise dead for years and years!

Hi there! :) And thanks for the straight-to-the-source link, nice to have something truly substantive after living with "indefinitely suspended" for most of the year. Now if Bloomberg could just toss out a decent casting rumor, like maybe Ms. Weitz, I quite got used to that one.

Well that is certainly good news... now I just hope Daniel Craig can make it back! This article makes it sound like that might be hard to work out, given his now booked schedule. I wonder if Sam Mendes will still direct as well?

Craig is under contract for at least one more Bond film. It appears that his schedule will be open after "The Girl With The Dragon Tatoo" shooting ends along with some re-shoots for another film are completed. I'm pretty sure Craig will be back in Bond 23. Whether or not he continues as Bond beyond 23...I'm guessing he does at least #24 and would not be surprised if he does a fifth. Right now I'll be happy to see 23 get started again.

Agreed; this protracted timetable for #23 gives time enough to accomodate all. I certainly hope Craigger does five total, as they've laid an unprecedented foundation for him. 23 will be a bellwether entry...

The DH blurb is citing (without acknowledging it) this EW article, which is a pile of rubbish. As HowardB points out, Craig's schedule is clear of filming commitments after Dragon Tattoo, spring of 2011. He has a deal for more Dragon films like he has a deal for more Bond films (likely C&A sequels too, also the rumored Tintin followups), and I'm sure all contracts cite commitments to each other, otherwise Craig/his agent could be sued for improper practices I'd guess.

As the Bond deal was first on his plate, I'd imagine scheduling that commitment would take the top spot, legally. But regardless I'm sure he'll be able to meet all those commitments, it's just business, a heavy schedule sure but not prohibitive IMO.

I wrote on this forum some time ago that, given the delays and uncertainties, I believed November 2012 was always going to the most likely release date because the anniversary is such a milestone (should that read MILL-STONE?).
I recall quite a few responses along the lines of "I can't wait that long"... well you've waited 2 years, so what's 2 more?
Hope the wait will be worth it and personally, I'm really pleased we can have a 50th anniversary 007...
Hope they don't go all Die Another Day on us. A nice return to Fleming would be welcome ( Risico anyone????)

With regard to Craig's "commitment" to the "Dragon Tatoo" films, despite the success of the first film in the US, the sequels have been disappointing critically and at the box office. That being said, the English language re-makes could do very well but they are not "Bond" films which are pretty much critic proof boxoffice gold....if the first one doesn't do well, I highly doubt that the sequels would even go forward. Craig appears to be a pretty grounded, pragmatic guy. While I don't see him playing Bond into his dottage....I don't think he'll just abandon the role prematurely. The other big factor is Craig seems to have a different type of relationship with EON than past Bond actors....he is a personal friend of Barbara Broccoli, appears to have more input into the films and most importantly, EON seems to willing to be more generous to DC moneywise and treat him less like the "hired help".

    Not for me thanks. :p

What I more concerned about is finally writing Craig as the man he should be in the secret service. "Discipline 007. Discipline."

First time poster - Ladies, Gentlemen................ So, November 2012 in the cinema, working backwards with CR and QoS as examples, when will they start production ???? Must be mid next year/end of 2011 ??? Balancing with "Hornets nest" and "played with fire" can we assume ?? Irrespective, it is great news.

Hopefully the time between now and filming will be used writing a good story to at least equal Casino Royale. I don't want another Quantum or Brosnan style action fest.

I think this deal saved Craig from the fate of Dalton. Thank God! If hey can keep Mendes as the director and make a solid bond with a little more standard bond ingrediances (more Bond theme, a good gadget or two, gunbarrel at the beginning, a slightly more suve Bond) but still having it feel like a Craig Bond movie, this will be great!

Great news now that we have a tentative plan on release I can start the planning for a release party and perfect my Vesper making. Although I am sad about the wait between movies I think having a release on the 50th anniversary of Bond (movie wise) is a good thing I just hope they dont try to get too cheesy with references to the past.

As far as 50th anniversary quips are concerned, I think they could be used as part of the title sequence, with brief glimpses of the past and a nod of some sort to the great Maurice Binder.
Other than that, I read someone suggest the past actors be seen playing backgammon together, which I think would be nice.
However, any role beyond an extra for the former bonds would be ridiculous, and I would not like any further "homage" like we have seen in the last three films. No more leeching off past ideas.

I seriously hope there are no more homage scenes to past films. One would think after Die Another Day and Quantum of Solace that people would have enough. I want a solid Bond film. Strong story and action scenes like the classic Connery films with a nice painted teaser poster.

I actually like DaltonFan1's idea about something in the title sequence...maybe there---and be done with it! This is an important entry in the canon, and it ought to be the best film it can be...

Sort of an OHMSS type series of images? I could get behind it.
  • SilentSpySilentSpy Private Exotic AreaPosts: 765MI6 Agent
The problem with the series of images from past films is that Daniel Craig only has two films to work from. The producers made an effort to say Casino Royale is the origin of Bond and the past Bonds aren't in the same universe. So, they really can't do the past images. Thus, the mistake of not doing a true origin of Bond and placing him in the 21st century. The best they can do are the homage scenes which in a subtle way are cool. But overdone like girl in oil, Bond going out of a plane without parachute, or walking in a desert aren't good at all. The best they can do to me is the painted poster, strong vintage feel, and bring back Q and Moneypenny. But make Q and Moneypenny serious professional characters. The virtual thing with Moneypenny in Die Another Day was horrible. Also, Q should dislike Bond like in the early films.

This series dosen't need any more excuses, or attempts, to keep digging up past images. It just re-enforces the idea how tired the films really are.

That's exactly the mentality that brought about Die Another Day.

Yes actually. Well meaning but ultimately ending up making a cut and paste Bond film. We don't need yet another Bond film giving nods to the past stuff. Quantum of Solace is almost as guilty as Die Another Day in the respect taking the old ideas and stuffing them into a new film.

    Oh brother 8-)

We'll just have to disagree, as I don't feel that classic Connery and DAD are that much alike. Showing scenes or images from past films, in the opening credits, is IMO quite different than 'cutting and pasting' a kitchen sinker, with recycled story elements permeating the entire film.

But I won't be drawn into such a tired debate...and you've already admonished me about "jumping to conclusions" in this thread :x
