Underrated Brosnan Era

It's no secret that Pierce Beosnan is my favourite actor to play James Bond and I would defend his movies to the best of my ability, And it seems like I am always having to defend them. There is no doubt that they are not as deep or as brutal as the Craig films or as suave as Connery's but I feel that all 4 - yes 4 - of his films are thoroughly entertaining. I think GE is as big and brash as CR. I think TND is a better generic Bond film than QoS. I think TWINE is more realistically emotional than many other bonds and I think that DAD.....is just a ridiculously entertaining piece of Cinema :) what's not to love?

I agree wholeheartedly. Never disliked Brosnan as Bond, never disliked Lazenby either. I rate the films and those actors lower than others, but that's not because they're bad, it's personal preference. I enjoy many of the other Bond films just a bit more, though Goldeneye is in my top 10. DAD has great camp value, + Michael Madsen, and TWINE is also good fun. I rate TND at the bottom. Again, ascetically, it's better than films like DAF or maybe even Moonraker, it just doesn't grab me the way those do.

TND is probably my least favourite of the 4 aswell. I still love it and think it has some very enjoyable action set pieces and witty banter but it's w little to short IMO and feels like it's over before it should be

I think it was between "Goldeneye" and "TWINE", but then again, I like a more serious Bond.

I like funny and serious bonds equally so. My favourite Brosnan moment is probably the most subtle one. It's the scene when in Carvers Party when the goons come up to Bond and say he has has an "ungent phonecall". I love the little confident smirk Brosnan gives them and how it turns to a serious one as they turn there back, as if he knows he is going to have to fight his way out of this situation. Love it

Bottom line: Brosnan was a GREAT Bond. An important and thrilling addition to the ranks of them who have had the honour throughout the years!

If the Brosnan era is underrated, I'd say it is more a fault of the scripts
he had to work with. He wanted to look at the darker side of Bond.
As did Dalton and Craig but didn't get the chance. I remember reading
that he didn't like some of his One-Liners and thought at times there where
    too many.

Ditto! And for the record, I think Brosnan was a fine Bond who was too often let down by his material.

DAD isn't all bad! It's #15 on my list! TND is awesome because it's so generic as you saud. TWINE is very dramatic, with a great score. GE... all time favorite bond!

    My quick evaluation-
Goldeneye-Awesome, done really well, excellent portayal by Brosnan, love the score and the feel of the movie. Nice to see Sean Bean at his best.

Tommorow Never Dies- The pre-title is great but the plot is everywhere, score could be better, villian's plot is dreadful and Bond feels like the terminator.

The world is not enough- Average, some of the characters are great some suck. Action likewise. Brosnan, Dench and Kitchen all perfect in their roles

Die Another Day- What a slap in the face!! Worst Bond Movie ever, I thought Diamonds are forever was bad. CGI? X-( Halle Berry? X-( Corny Lines? X-( Villians plot? X-( Ice hotel thingy? X-( Score? X-(

But wait a minute, this ain't Brosnan's fault is it?
The plot, the score the CGI all that wasn't overseen by Pierce. He did what he was told and his acting skills were always top-notch and he looked like he was having fun. So, I like Brosnan's portyal which I think is underrated but the movies aren't.

The Brosnan movies have some of the best action scenes in the entire series. You'll never hear somebody say they were bored while watching a Brosnan movie.

Also GoldenEye is an all time classic.

Goldeneye is by far my favourite Brosnan film. Unfortunately, the other 3 fall flat for me, and none of them are anywhere near as good as GE - But hey, they're still James Bond films and I can still enjoy each immensely even if they are near the bottom of my bond list.

My Brosnan order, with overall position of all 23 films in brackets:
    1 - Goldeneye (9)
2 - The World Is Not Enough (19)
    3 - Tomorrow Never Dies (20)
    4 - Die Another Day (22)
    1 - LALD, 2 - AVTAK, 3 - LTK, 4 - OP, 5 - NTTD, 6 - FYEO, 7 - SF, 8 - DN, 9 - DAF, 10 - TSWLM, 11 - OHMSS, 12 - TMWTGG, 13 - GE, 14 - MR, 15 - TLD, 16 - YOLT, 17 - GF, 18 - DAD, 19 - TWINE, 20 - SP, 21 - TND, 22 - FRWL, 23 - TB, 24 - CR, 25 - QOS

    1 - Moore, 2 - Dalton, 3 - Craig, 4 - Connery, 5 - Brosnan, 6 - Lazenby

I'm born in the 90's and I've found most of my friends think Brosnan is the best. However that's probably because he was Bond during our childhood. Personally I like Brosnan but he's not my favourite and i've never felt his era underrated - if anything it's overrated! I hear praise about Brosnan all the time! In most cases it's rightfully so but come on, he's no Dalton :007)

Goldeneye: A great film through and through, so many classic moments and Alec makes a very good villain. Natalya is THE Bond girl of the Brosnan era, Alec is THE villain of the Brosnan era and Onnatop is THE henchwoman of the Brosnan era. Also the tank chase is the best action scene from Brosnan's movies. Goldeneye really is leaps and bounds better than the rest.

Tomorrow Never Dies: Enjoyable, fun, action packed but come on, it's no Goldeneye.

The World is not Enough: Enjoyable, fun, action packed but come on, it's no Tomorrow Never Dies.

Die Another Day: Enjoyable, fun, action packed but no The World Is Not Enough.

Brosnan peaked too soon, but overall his films are good!
    Now, they only eat rat.

I think Brosnan was an excellent Bond. His portrayal was exciting and I really wanted to be Bond in a way that I didn't feel with Dalton. He walked the fine line between realism and fantasy necessary in the more ambitious Bond films, and he could do tough fight scenes (such as the one with Trevelyan), humour (such as in Wai lin's arsenal in Vietnam), vulnerability (such as the
later scenes with Elektra) and more with aplomb.

As Martin Campbell said, Brosnan could also portray the aristocratic element of Bond too and was a great choice to reboot the franchise. In many respects he's the most versatile actor in the role since Connery.

And Goldeneye is such a bangin' movie :)

I happen to think that outside of Goldeneye (which is still my fave bond) the scripts where not that strong, but he did a very good job with what he had.

Also, I would of love to seen a slightly darker bond, but I can watch the underrated "Taylor of Panama" if i want to see him play a more darker sort of spy.

He's absolutely excellent in that, as is Geoffrey Rush (Who incidentally would make a fantastic Bond villain) I wish the Brosnan of "Tailor of Panama" had been allowed into any of his Bond efforts, I'd probably rank him higher, even though he's a good Bond as it stands.

He was worth it for GoldenEye alone. After that, he and Dench were probably the most appealing thing about his era. The rest of the actors and scripts were a bit lackluster to me. Tomorrow Never Dies is one of the weakest Bond films, in my opinion. It had no style and a number of very fake sets.

Brosnan was a great Bond, his problem was a lack of great material in most cases. But Pierce was always good, in my eyes he was already Bond before he got the part, just watch his older movies and interviews on TV. Bond all the way and definitely a Bond we all imagined we wanted to be ourselves. A role model.

best Brosnan moments: The look he gave the banker after he kills him: TWINE, The scene where he finds Paris dead in his hotelroom, how he executes the hitman and than has fun in the car chase in TND, The way he kills Electra in TWINE and basically all of GE. Also loved how he entered the Hong Kong hotel, dressed in broken clothes but still like he owned the place.

Great Bond, wishes he would have had the material Dalton and Craig had.

I grew up with Brosnan as Bond so I have a soft spot for him. I think he's got the wit and the charm but saying that, out of his films there's only Goldeneye that I really really like.
However, if anyone's seen the documentary on Desmond Llewellyn that Brosnan is in and you've heard him talk about Llewellyn, it's clear how much of a great guy he is and how much he felt privileged to be Bond.

Great Bond, wishes he would have had the material Dalton and Craig had.

Exactly my opinion as well. Part of the reason I feel PB got shafted by EON. Hire the perfect Actor to play Bond, then feed him 1 good script, and 3 mediocre crap ones. Watch him still pull it off with charm, panache, style and class while scoring the biggest grossing Bond Films at the time. Then give him the boot, complain about Bond not being grounded in reality and sell his replacement as "a return to Fleming". Total crap. EON should be ashamed for the way they treated Brosnan. They wrote the silly, OTT scripts that they turned and then used as reasons for his dismissal.

I realize they had just gotten the rights to CR, I understand that they wanted to reboot. But, I will argue the point to my dying breath. Given the same material, Brosnan would have been better than any of the other 5.

Brosnan was better than he was given credit for, and certainly better than his material most of the time. But no way would he have been better than Connery. No way! :D
