Looks like a copy, the steel is protruding from the slot and isn't a rim but a bar made just for the cut out area. It's a modern digital image that has been converted to B&W too.

could be... I was just sent these photos, Wanted you guys Opinions

    Cheers ASP9mm -{

What do you mean Though?..... I get what you are saying about
''the steel is protruding from the slot''

what what do you mean when you say..... ''isn't a rim but a bar
made just for the cut out area''

Isn't the brim / Plate or whatever it is in it... sticking out here?

I agree with what you are saying about the B&W photo.. something
not quite right about it, Photography ID'ing etc is not my forte in all
    honesty

It does protrude out on the prop, but only on the left side of the slot as it is a ring of steel with a gap that hasn't been joined. the slot has been cut after the hat was used to show the rim. The fake hat in your picture doesn't have a ring but a bar inserted into a pre cut slot. Someone has tried to make a copy of the prop but misinterpreted how the steel rim was fitted. The bow is also incorrectly proportioned. They've had a good go at copying the prop, but it doesn't cut it.

As to the image being modern digital, that is pretty obvious. Only digital images have that look to them, and the B&W effect is a conversion from the original colour image. The modern laser printed packing air pocket wrap in the background and the self sealing card backed envelope under the hat kinda give it away too.

Here have a better look :)

    aring_zpsa69341f0.jpg

the whole brim is made out of steel and covered with felt, the slots where then cut in. This is the hat that is used in the fort knox scene and wedged between the bars.

Aghhh .... I see what you mean now with the Protrusion.. I did notice it was sticking out a
little further than on other photos of the prop, But I thought maybe - the hats brim had
been bent or something like that, making it stick out more.

I never noticed or looked at the Boxes / Envelopes its sitting on to look for clues, Nice one,
    great observations, Thanks -{

So in the film... the hat's metal brim is completely Sealed off.. and not seen, and after the
film it was slit open to show / display the thickness of its internal Brim..... Yes? was it one
of the Bond production team members who did this... you see the original In Ken Adam's
office in THUNDERBALL i think next to the FRWL attache Case... and its got these Slits / slots
    showing the Brim..

I thought the one thats now recognized as the original... was maybe only made for the bit when
the hat sticks in the bars in Fort Knox... hence why its Brim is protruding slightly. to make it stick
into the pre cut slots in the bars ... or something like that.

I always thought the EON hat was just used for this... Is the EON hat the one seen on the Grass
after it cuts the head off the statue, and you can see the metal Brim Underneath? on show lying
beside the statues head? ...... I always thought that was another hat just for that shot again.

I have some photos of the original hat from 2002 when it was about to go on show at the Science
Museum... and there's photos of one of the museums staff / assistants holding it. and the Metal
Brim cannot be seen at all, just the Metal Plate / internal brim sticking out via slots on both sides of
the hat, the metal brim cannot be seen at all when the hat is upside down, like it is on the grass in
the film.... which is why I always thought it was a different hat again, dressed up slightly differently

when you say the hat in the pictures doesn't have a Ring but a Bar.. do you mean, the internal Metal
Plate.... The original hat's brim must be metal all the way through Yes? and not like a ring of metal on
the outside of the hats brim around the edge... it's clear to see in TV Spots etc and interviews the hat
is pretty heavy when guests and TV Hosts etc are allowed to hold it.

This is why you have a bit poking out at an angle on the left hand side of the split.

ASPM9MM...... Great diagram, fantastic... cleared a lot of things I
wondered about the original.... appreciate that a lot

So the hat on the grass after the statues head comes off... which
clearly shows the metal Brim... Is NOT the same hat now owned by
EON that was in the bars at Fort Knox?

Obviously the person who made that replica hat used this picture as their main source for making it and misinterpreted the picture and construction of the hat completely.

OK You Guys Got me.... :)) :)) :)) Sorry Had to do something for
April Fools Day. Traditionally in Scotland known as 'hunt the gowk'
Century's Back It goes on for 2 days :) ... so posting this from
Scotland - the 12 Noon Cut off time didn't apply. :)

Hope you know it was all just a bit of fun. no harm or anything like
    that intended at all.

Cheers Guys.. I Made the Replica A while back from a Hat I had for Years
here it is when I bought it at Auction as far back as 2005 I think it was.

Will Post Up some MAKING OF photos :007)

Got my Local Metal Works to cut a 1KG Steel Plate, 3mm thick, had to
have it rolled in a machine as the thickness and grade of the metal,
was impossible to shape with a mallet, once bonded with strong resin,
took it to a traditional Hatters and vintage Tailor / Restorer of old suits
in Glasgow, who then fitted vintage Felt they had, that matched that of
the hat itself, over the brim.

Just a Fun Replica for my own collection... But Couldn't resist a little April
Joke.... hope none of you guys get pissed off with me, I genuinely wasn't
going to post up here... as I knew 100% it wouldn't fool anyone on here :)

    In the Making:

After Felt has been Added and Stitched:

Toyed with the idea of leaving the Stitching / Lining Off around the edge of the edge of the brim as
its not on the original, But since its a Replica... thought it best to keep / retain it.

    Cheers. Mick

I think it is a shame you did that to the hat :#
  • Asp9mmAsp9mm Over the Hills and Far Away.Posts: 7,535MI6 Agent
Yeah, it's kinda ruined now. It would have looked more screen accurate if you'd have not put the steel rim in :# Hefty price to pay for a April Fools :o

I fully Agree......... The Value of the hat is now Ruined, But hey.....

It was never going to turn out to be the plain hat he wore in the film :#

Ha Ha ... imagine if it was ..... Classic :))

it was just sitting in a box for years, I was never going to sell it on etc
so just decided to convert it..... I do agree 100% with you guys it would
have been more valid to leave it as a plain hat. but I just wanted it to
have the steel brim... like I say it was never going to be sold on etc.

Well I did this a while back... didn't do it Just for an April Fools Joke.

Next time I get / Find something vintage... that I intent to modify, I will
run it past you guys, so you can have the chance to save it from the
    destruction of conversion.... Ha Ha

It's not going to turn out to be the steel rimmed hat used in the film now though either :))

Is it all glued down? Can't you salvage something from it?

:)) ha ha Good point :)) well..... since it was never going to be
either, wanted it as the SFX hat for show... like I say just a fun
    Replica.

ha ha I don't want to salvage it :) .... come on, your making me
    feel bad now :# :( :( ....... :))

Its Fu**ed Now anyway..... The Metal Plate is Bonded in. If I ever
find another one like this some day will leave it plain - I promise :007)

    Thanks :)

    The Gold Bars are actually:

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/GOLD-BAR-MONEY-BANK-/261192849325?pt=UK_Collectables_Moneyboxes_RL&hash=item3cd04e97ad

Money Bank Ornaments.... made from Ceramic and coated in a nice
reflective Gold finish... reasonably made ornaments, great for display
    fuller and background dressing etc.

I was in a local discount store and saw these on sale for £1 each, But
most of them were all chipped and scuffed etc, so asked to see Manager
who let me into the shops store room, where more were in mint condition
and let me pick out the best ones... should have paid £10 for 10 Gold Bars
But he said call it £5 since you are buying a few, which I thought was real
    decent of him.
