Topic: Re-cast the lead(s) of movie classics

I think it would be fun to speculate who could be cast in remakes of old movies (pre 1990's).

Here are some of my ideas:

Die Hard: Bradley Cooper as john McClane

Heh! That's fun, I certainly like Gosling for Schaffer: he'd do that quietness well. I know he's the wrong nationality but I'd quite like a Clooney type as Smith. Or Liam Neeson perhaps? But he might actually be getting a bit old now.

Interesting choices N24.

I would go as follows;

Major Smith - Daniel Craig
Schaffer - Scott Eastwood/Chris Pratt/Chris Hemsworth
Mary - Joanne Froggatt/Vanessa Kirby
Heidi - MyAnna Buring
Von Hapen - Tom Hardy

"Any of the opposition around..?"

I'm not sure about Craig in this one and I don' think Scott Eastwood has the actin chops to play Schaffer, but I did consider Chriss Pratt and Chris Hemsworth. I don' t like Froggatt as Mary, but the other actresses are good.

I think Firth, just like Burton, is too old. Joachim Rønneberg who was only 24 when he was the leader of the Vemork mission. The oldest  Norwegian SOE member was 44 when he joined, and he was only accepted because he had " a particular set of skills". Chris Pine was on my list for Major Schaffer.

Re: Re-cast the lead(s) of movie classics

I don't know...I see Smith as being a 'too old for this mission' kind of guy anyways...he even comments as such several times in the film.  I think the main reason that he goes is that he's got the connection to that one other German commander who knows him (during the big dining room sequence) to help verify his story.  As such, his age is secondary to the fact that he's the right person for the job.

To that end, I see Firth having the necessary acting chops and charm to do the part justice.

I like Hemsworth for it! Not sure we’ve found our perfect Smith yet though ajb007/smile

Re: Re-cast the lead(s) of movie classics

Casablanca

Rick - Daniel Craig
Ilsa -  Cate Blanchet,

Re: Re-cast the lead(s) of movie classics

Hemsworth or Pine for Shaffer, absolutely.
I also think that Fassbender makes for a perfect Von Hapen.
Mary and Heidi...honestly, there are a ton of great women actors who could fill those roles and do great jobs.  As is typical, the female roles are pretty minor for a WW2 'men on a mission' movie, so almost any woman who is available when the film is scheduled for filming would suffice.  Mary needs to have some chemistry with the actor playing Smith (and be age appropriate), but that's about it.

Good points. But Burton was 45 when he made Where Eagles Dare while Colin Firth is 59. Burton was an alcoholic, but Firth is still 14 years older. Maybe Michael Fassbender (43) could be a good Smith? Instead Stellan Skargård can play von Hapen.

My God...Burton was only 45 when he made WED????  He looks like he's 60.

Re: Re-cast the lead(s) of movie classics

Actually I miscalculated. Born in 1925 he was 43 when he made Where Eagles Dare. Eastwood is only five years younger.

Wow: I’d have said he was about 15 years younger in that movie.

Re: Re-cast the lead(s) of movie classics

Eastwood is a healthfreak, Burton was an alcoholic.

Re: Re-cast the lead(s) of movie classics

Yeah I thought he was much younger than late thirties in that.

It’s hard to think of a British lead who would be good in it. I was thinking Cruise would actually make a good Smith. Maybe we can swap the American and British leads? ajb007/smile
