Bond 24 draft nearly done.

http://www.empireonline.com/news/story.asp?NID=40356

According to John Logan the first draft of the script for Bond 24 is almost done.

Unsurprisingly, he doesn't give much away: "Will we see the return of Quantum? “No comment.” Will we see Blofeld in Bond 24? “No comment.” Will there be any other Double-0 agents? A pause, which gave us a quantum of hope. “Ah... no comment!”

Sort of confirms shooting will begin in October as well.

Very excited by his enthusiasm for it.

Loved the line about Double Taking Pigeon :))

I trust Logan. Skyfall's script was fantastic and working with Mendes, this is going to be something special.
So stand by for what promises to be the biggest Bond of all (again). Bond 24 is released in the UK on October 23, 2015, and in the US on November 6, 2015.

    This line gives me chills.

"when I’m working on the new Bond I’m constantly going back to Fleming and the other movies " :)

I'm glad that he's giving nothing away. Right, that's the last I'm going to read about the next film (inserts fingers in ears). Avoiding spoilers, etc. Mind you, I've said that before.... 8-)

    I know some will disagree but I thought there was plenty of Fleming in SF. -{

I'm not expecting tremendous things . . . Skyfall was good, but not great. Like any other Logan screenplay. I do hope Logan doesn't resort to once again to cheesiness to make Bond "edgy," like the chair scene with Silva. I hope he doesn't crib other movies, like The Dark Knight.

I read the article where he says some the characters and themes will continue -- what does that mean? The only new characters that survived from Skyfall are staples M, Moneypenny, and Q . . . and what theme did Skyfall have except, yet again, starting things over? Terrorism? We had that in the other two. After three films, can we move forward now?

Ah, I knew it would be only a matter of time before we got the first negative comment about a script that hasn't been filmed--or been shown to the producers--or has had so much as a semicolon leaked. . .

Is it only first draft? I remember newspapers reporting a script being shown to possible directors months ago.

Yes, I found my old post. "Headhunters" director Morten Tyldum was shown a script in late May. Surely it must be beyond the draft stage now?

I had the same thought. It seems unlikely that Mendes would've signed up for Bond 24 without seeing at least a draft script.

Here is another Idea of mine -

Bond is framed for the Murder of a top Foreign Official, and the Service has got 48 Hours to hand him over to the Governmental Authorities of that Country. In that Time, Bond must fight to clear his Name, find out who is really responsible for the Murder and stop a devious Plot that would have catastrophic Proportions for the whole World.

For me the scripts went down hill when they stopped using typewriters and
Started with word processors. They just don't feel right. :p :))

I'm assuming this refers to me. I wasn't commenting on the script. I haven't seen the script. My comments are directed to Logan's body of work as a whole and his commentary.

I plead guilty, GM, and I also confess to using a great deal of satire in what I'm saying. I may be confusing you with someone else, but it seems earlier we heard some bashing of Logan on the basis of Star Trek: Nemesis, a film he wrote more than a decade ago (and which wasn't that bad, in my opinion). This discounts what I think is an impressive body of work: Gladiator, Aviator, Hugo, and even little ol' Skyfall--movies that have proven popular and which have been acclaimed. There's a cliche in show bizniss that you're only as good as your last picture--and Logan's last picture was pretty good. So why the skepticism?

yes theres something magical about tap tap ching sound of a good type writer , :) I opted to do typing at school back in the 70s
there was 3 of us boys to about 20 girls , but we (the boys) all intended to join the police ,so typing would be handy
I have fond images of Dave Starsky huddled over his type writer pencil behind ear , that's who I wanted to be :)
By the way, did I tell you, I was "Mad"?

Haha, I see. Yeah, I get your point. I don't think it was me bashing Nemesis, but it could have been, as I wasn't a fan -- took some friends to see it after convincing them the ST movies were good and occasionally great, and, well . . . I'm told, though, that a lot was cut out of the final print. But you're right that some of his films deserve praise, as I'd forgotten about Aviator and Hugo.

The problem, I guess, is that I want someone more like Maibaum. I realize that in part it isn't fair to be skeptical of the screenwriter(s), as what they draft doesn't always make it to the screen, and that Maibaum and his writing partners had Fleming to crib from, but Logan just seems too generic somehow by comparison. His style lacks gravitas -- he gets big budget pictures, but more often, his screenplay is the weakest element, as least to me. Even in Skyfall, which was good but not as good as Casino Royale, there were moments that I thought were nice -- the poem and Bond run, for instance -- but nothing felt truly weighty to me, despite the fact that obviously I was supposed to think so. He seemed like he was borrowing a lot from other recent movies, such as The Dark Knight, in the same way Nemesis seemed to borrow too much from The Wrath of Khan.

The humor lacked the same level of wit and creativity that Maibaum and his co-writers might have applied. For instance, the only exchange I really laughed at was "You going to complain the whole way?"/"Go ahead, eject me then." The rest just seemed jokey rather than witty. I'm more of the "No, Mr. Bond, I expect you to die." sort. Heck, even the exchange in the Mustang in Thunderball was more witty. "Fly here often?" and "No, some men don't want to be taken for a ride." What I like about these lines is they sound plausible as speech but at the same time are still rather clever, especially with Connery's delivery.

Logan's plots often leave me feeling like something's missing. I still, for instance, don't know if Bond actually got M killed by bringing her to his home or not.

These are the sorts of things that underwhelm me about Logan. I can't deny his success, but if I have a choice between Gladiator or Spartacus, Nemesis or Wrath of Khan, The Last Samurai or Dances with Wolves, or Any Given Sunday or North Dallas Forty, it's not the Logan version I'm going to go with.

Maibaum's scripts certainly had the sardonic wit, however I have read that some of those lines came from Connery himself.

Richard Maibaum? Really? For about a thirty-year period the only screenplays he wrote were for the Bond films. That shows either an utter lack of ambition or a very limited demand for his services.

Or that he was satisfied with what he was doing. I co-wrote a textbook starting in my late 20s and could retire now on that alone if I wanted to, never writing another word for pay in my life. I only do things that move me at this point.

Richard Maibaum deserves all credit for being part of the core team that got the Bond series up, going, and successful; and I think he was at his best when he was called upon to make faithful adaptations of Fleming material. When he was required to come up with a plot on his own (as in The Man with the Golden Gun), though. . .uh-oh. Still, I don't see any point in longing for another Maibaum; any more than we should demand another Cubby Broccoli, Terence Young, Peter Hunt, or John Barry. Those men had their day; they're gone; they're not coming back. Celebrate what they did, but it's a new generation from which we should demand the best.
