Second Reboot

I've been having a little think about this during a slow afternoon at work while reading through the Bond 24 section of the forum. Given that Skyfall and Bond 24 are concentrating so much on Bond's age and his relevance in the modern world, does this mean that when Craig's tenure finishes and another actor comes in, will they reboot the series once more? Surely they can only continue with an ageing Bond for so long? Or do you think they will stop focusing on the age factor and continue as if it never happened? Personally I think Mendes and the writers have made a mistake in referencing it so much as there's too much of a leap from CR and QOS when he was a young agent just starting out to SF where he has aged and had enough of the job. Your thoughts?

I think it fits better in the Bond 24 forum so have moved it there.

Personally, I'd say one reboot every 50 years or so is enough and Craig is still relatively young compared to his predecessors who were making Bond movies well into their fifties without their age being overly stressed (a few lines from NSNA aside).

I'd say that was a long shot....about as likely as Elvis singing the theme tune :D

I think it would have to be a reboot in the sense the next Bond actor willbe younger (born in the 1980's?) and Bond's age will suddenly no longer be a theme. But it will probably not be a reboot in the sense CR was. CR was a new style and showed the origin of Bond. My guess is a reboot more in the lines of TLD or GE.

I hope they don't do another reboot. Casino Royale was a very good origin story that refreshed a franchise that started to get stale. One of the nice things about the earlier times the actor playing Bond changed was that the producers didn't explain it, they just went on with the series like nothing happened. During the pre-production of OHMSS it was decided not to explain why Bond suddenly looked different from the previous movies. One idea was to have Bond undergo plastic surgery to explain his new look but I'm glad they didn't (it would have explained why Blofeld doesn't recognize Bond). Also, after Dalton took over the role of Bond from Roger Moore nothing was made of the fact that Bond al of a sudden was 750 years younger compared to the last movie. I really hope that the producers will do the same thing after Craig's tenure. Just get on with it and make every movie a standalone Bond adventure.

I never bought the idea of a re-boot. What re-boot? If we accept that Craig's entry was a re-boot, then we also accept that every new Bond actor had a re-boot ("This never happened to the other fellow!"). And Elba is such a good actor that he would take over the role very smoothly - no need for any re-boot. So let's hope he get's it!

I don't think anyone is thinking that far ahead. I mean, if you watch the three that Craig has done, each one ends as though saying "And now we can start telling the Bond stories you all know and love." It feels rather like each of those movies has been a reboot, as they essentially get us to the same place only for the next film to seem to want to start over again.

I fully understand that viewpoint....I just think of them as 'staging posts' along the way to the finished article...each film adding more of the Bond we understand...

Today's cinema audience seem to want a little more depth to their heros. So
far with Craig's three films, we've learnt more about Bond as a man, than in all
The Brosnan and Moore Bond films. :D

I do wish they were coming out faster, though. If we had six or seven films with Craig, I would be okay with this. But at the pace they're going, they're moving more toward five at the most.

I think most of us would prefer the films to be on a two-year cycle...but Craig obviously wants to do other films as well....plus we'd hate the quality to slip...

Was it Daniel Craig or Pierce Brosnan that wanted his Bond to die in action? I vaguely remember someone talking about it. The Bond age issue was another thing I didn't like about Skyfall.

I welcome the reboot. Perhaps the producers will be brave enough or take enough polls to get Nolan on the job. He seems to like the older Bond movies from his Batman movies. There are references to From Russia with Love, Thunderball, and On Her Majesty's Secret Service (in Inception). And he did mention something about how he wanted to do it. I kind of assume he wants a blank slate and multiple movies. So we can get a true trilogy or sequel. Not these movies that are marketed as direct sequels.

I still say it's a shame we didn't get Tarantino to do Casino Royale to tie into Dr. No. Then a well thought reboot so the series wouldn't have to be rebooted for a third time. I'm thinking that Casino Royale will be the movie everyone remembers now from Daniel Craig and the rest will be passed over.

Interesting. Craig's future Bond films have yet to come out and they are already deeemed forgettable.

I don't think DC was playing an old Bond in Skyfall but rather a badly
injured Bond, Once he got the bullet fragments out, he was back to his
    old self. :) :))

Not forgettable so much as these aren't that interesting or worth while. Kind of like Die Another Day. Maybe I'll be wrong. But we are three movies in now. Every other Bond actor had his best at that point. Even though with Connery I think Thunderball is his best. But still Dr. No, From Russia with Love, and Goldfinger are all great. I don't expect much different now from Daniel Craig's Bond movies. That's why Casino Royale is his best for me.

That whole bullet fragment thing was another Terminator like element (as Lazenby would call it) that I didn't like. I didn't think Bond was back to his old self until he captured Silva. Remember the elevator scene when we are supposed to think he might fall. And other things.

Oh dear, I hate this topic when it crops up in Star Trek circles. Causes headaches. - Here we go.

Ok,- the way I see it, Bond has had "mini reboots" every time the actor playing 007 changes. A "medium reboot" which has happened once, and one "Holy corker a FULL reboot!" once.

The medium occurred when Pierce Brosnan stepped in (only Mr Llewelyn carried on as Q. ) New M, (M-Mawd) new MPenny, new Tanner. Or perhapsa I should really say an established Tanner, as well as a new Bond.

The Full Reboot of course was when Mr Craig pitched up. Villers, no MPenny, no Q, Dame Judi is playing a different M (Same actress, diff character as M-Manf) no Tanner. Most notably of all, the entire back catalogue - Bond catalogue? of history has been thrown into the Shark infested tank. This has been reinforced with the introduction of a new M, (M-Mallr) as well as Q2 and EMP alongside TannerK.

So - once Mr C stops playing Bond (which Thankfully is not for a while yet,) it may only be a mini reboot, if Mr's Finnes, Wishaw, Kinnear and Ms Harris all carry on in their roles.

Did all that make sense? :#

As to Mr Craig, - his Bond at the start of Skyfall and the end of the film is the same man. Look at the close up of him entering the shot up Istanbul flat, and again when he tells M-Mallr he is ready to get back to work. Bond is back on form, ready to get on with things. Healthy complection, looks focused, and ready to get on with things. Mind you saying that, that is what he looked like at the end of CR-06 and QoS!
I just hope we get a decent solid story in the next film that moves all the characters, but especially Bond, forward. Enough looking at the characters past. That kind of ancient trauma fallback has ruined Batman for me!

I liked the trauma of Batman, as it goes to prove that Bruce Wayne
Is the hero, even when he's not in the mask. -{ he doesn't need any
Of the gadgets, his inner core is so strong. :D
Which I feel they are doing with Craig's Bond, showing the human agent.
Who even without the toys and suffering injury. Still finds the inner strength
To get the job done. :D

I would agree Pussy, except for obe thing. It needs subtlety in the writing.
So far for Bond they laid it on with a trowel. In the Nolan Batman films they used an industrial digger! I guess I am a bit put out because Batman Begins got everything 100% correct for me. The only iffy bit was Katie Holmes as Rachel D. Thr latter films lost some of the elements I liked, and made Wayne too brooding and the overall tone gloomy and miserable. Plus some of the character motivation in the third one made no sense to me.
The Craig Bonds are different. CR-06 is my fav Bond film overall because it hits all the buttons. Even without Penny and Q. Although the character goes through Terminator mode in QoS, SF picks up the pieces and fills in the characters backstory to an acceptable level, while tidying up "the establishment." All well and good. The down side is we are watching everyone talk about 007 as a has been! Even EMP in a way. Its a little offputting, as it goes against the fact we see he is physically viable with all the running around, from the point Silva is captured. Crumbs, if they had been really clever they could have said M-Manf had Bond's duff test results deliberately planted as a double bluff even Tanner didn't know in case there was an inside man, and Bond knew this. Pity they didn't, it would have added a hint of post Quantum paranoia.
Re your previous comments about humour, I see your point. I'd just like to see some of the mischievious humour hinted in CR-06, not just dry sarcasim.

For the next couple of films, we def don'tneed any kind of reboot. Except hopefully military issue ones when 007 is on a recce for re target, when on re mission! (Sorry!)
