I'm watching the last part of season 5 of Vikings. It's stil the best viking viking themed story on TV or screen, but that's still damming with faint praise. I just saw a scene Harald Fairhair is in York. He first talks to an actor who can't hide his American accent to save his life, then he fights some and then gives a speach about extending his power from France to Scotland, from Ireland to Rus(sia), and he wants York to be the capital. He is wearing some kind of Hollywood medieval biker outfit, his face is full of tatoos and his hair is braided and fairly short,
Bollocks!
Harald Fairhiar promised not to cut his hair until he is king of Norway, and at this point he clearly isn't. His ambitions were to unite Norway, not some international viking empire, and I never heard of him involved in fighting between small kingdoms in Britain. There is no evidence to suggest vikings used tatoos, but I guess it's cool now so that why they use it in the show.
I'll continue watching, but only because there are so few viking movies and TV shows where they aren't wearing horned helmets. If the Americans here can imagine a world where there are very few cowboy movies and no good ones, and most people belive cowboys wore hats with large pom-poms .... that's how things are like for a Norwegian with an interest in vikings.  ajb007/mad

Are there any film producers in Norway (or other Scandinavian countries) who you can lobby to make a Viking film?

Looks like I picked the right time to watch it ... Season 2 starts on 22nd October in the UK.

I like Daniel Bruhl as an actor. He was excellent as Niki Lauda in 'Rush'

I've just finished binge watching the second series of 'The Alienist'. Really, really enjoyed it.

I do love anything set in that period of time. 'Ripper Street' rates as one of my most favourite series ever and this is of a similar vein.

I really hope there is a third series.

I like the Frankenstein Chronicles in a similar vein.

That's on my watch list. I'm not sure why I haven't watched it yet or how it passed me by when it was on TV especially has Sean Bean in it !!

Re: Anything Good on TV ?

From watching The Professionals on Amazon Prime, I've been looking up a few interviews
on Lewis Collins on YouTube.  On one he said he "could" have been the drummer for The
Beatles before Ringo got the Job. As he was working as a hairdresser with Paul's Brother
and he told him he could get him an audition for the Band. Lewis said " I told him, in a
couple of years I could be earning £42 a week here "  ajb007/biggrin

I've been watching the David Hare dramatisations about how venal the British govt is - more of a documentary these days.  ajb007/crap

That said, there's a running joke about stuff like Collateral and Roadkill that you get a point every time something occurs that would never happen in real life.

Oddly, it does tend to resemble aspects of Spectre - still at the time of writing the last James Bond film. All those internecine goings-on and thwarting of democracy. If it's not your cup of tea, I can see why many didn't take to Spectre.

I read about that only recently!!

Apparently he was quite musical.

Ringo? He's never been musical.

For those with BritBox, Hammer House Of Horror has been added and some Hammer movies including The Devil Rides Out  ajb007/smile

Yeah, well, sometimes nothin' can be a real cool hand.

I watched Vampire Circus after lunch, I hadn’t seen it for many years and enjoyed it very much.

Re: Anything Good on TV ?

I’m onto episode 8 of The Prisoner. Is there a better opening title sequence on any other series, if there is let me know. The Prisoner is just perfect, it sets up the whole story of the series and Ron Grainer’s theme is unbeatable. More the pity that most series made now just show the title card and sometimes not even showing the names of the stars or crew.

Yeah, well, sometimes nothin' can be a real cool hand.

Re: Anything Good on TV ?

Tonight I watched Being Frank: The Frank Gardner Story. The British journalist who was shot six times while reporting from Saudi Arabia, sixteen years ago. He suffered a spinal injury which left him partly paralysed. In this documentary he shares his remarkable story and talks with others who have also suffered spinal injuries.

Re: Anything Good on TV ?

I've started watching "Star cops" on Britbox another 80 British Sci-Fi show. Some good
stories but laughable special effects. You could see they were trying to go for an
" Outland" vibe but sadly with the budget of a school play.

Re: Anything Good on TV ?

I’ve started watching Hammer House Of Horror on BritBox. I didn’t get to see this when it first showed in 1980, and I am enjoying it very much. The Peter Cushing episode, The Silent Scream is especially good.

Yeah, well, sometimes nothin' can be a real cool hand.

Watched BBC's Roadkill. Enjoyable rubbish, a shaggy dog story though, which means it's just set itself up for a second series, no big finale then!

Watching Survivors ( BBC 1975) on Britbox, given we're in a pandemic at the moment, I
thought it's a suitable time. The basic story is a virus from China spread across the world
killing millions.
