Quite an understatement, my friend.
Bond jumping off the Dam is an impressive Scene though
I agree it makes a great youtube video, but in the context of the movie it makes no sense. Why does he jump? What's the motivation? is he followed by several russian agents trying to kill him? is he pushed by Jaws? No, he just jumps.
And perhaps more important, if he jumped the dam, how come he jumps again a few minutes later from a mountain top?
There is a deleted Scene which takes place before the Jump, so it explains things a bit more clearly.

Quite forward-thinking actually. That's precisely the reason why The Dark Knight was a classic and the Dark Knight Rises was underrated.

Why?
Why build a death star, with a big flaw in the design ?
To make entertaining for the audience.
All in all a rather good start for a new Bond era, a very solid performance by Pierce, which I enjoyed immensely in 1995 and still do, some awesome scene (dam jump, tank chase, the fight with Trevelyan) good introduction of supporting characters and the best villain of the Brosnan era. Cons are the plane jump and some rather bad special effects (the crash of the russian fighter plane into Severnaya is clearly a model and you recognize it the moment you see it).
It always has a pretty good fight with TLD for my 5th place in my top five.

What does the deleted scene do? Are there a succession of mastiffs after Pierce as he runs along the tarmac,.

It shows Bond sneaking into the control room to press the button to open the gate.

Well, they made a mistake designing the death star, that's why. Only they knew, and that's why the death star plans were secret. But the rebel alliance stole them. That's a reason. But why does Pierce Brosnan risk his life doing that base jump? for fun?
His info must have been that was the best way in.
Then work his way up to the storage area, blow it up
then leave by stealing an aircraft.
Thanks TP, I've been trying to work that PTS out for ages and you solved the mistery!
So M said, "look Bond, you just have to do a base jump. Don't worry, there will be no guards. Who's going to look for russian headquarters at the bottom of a dam anyway? then you just have to escape jumping from the mountain top, ok?"
Now I'm not saying there's any logic to it But this is how I imagine it.............
Because the " weak spot" in security was at the bottom of a 600 ft drop, The Russians weren't too
worried anyone would be crazy enough to try ( Didn't count on 007)
Once inside Bond and his mate would work their way up, to destroy all those nasty canisters. then steal a
plane to escape. Sadly it didn't quite work out that way But as Bond escapes, He knows ( from weeks of
surveillance ) that a plane should be getting ready to take off. Hence why it's not luck that a plane is there
but Brilliant tactical planning from Bond.
I can understand people have problems with the odd scene or sequence in Bond, But I always try and figure out a
backstory that ( with a stretch of the imagination ) works, ................ for me at least.
You should read the script...it fills in a few 'blanks' for some people...
I really liked the score, I see a lot of people don't like it that much, I think it fits the movie perfectly. The different instrumental soundeffects fits perfectly in in the environment of Russia IMHO.
Even though it was released in 1995, the Film still very much feels like a Cold War Thriller
Agree the score is perfect. Cold and gritty music for a cold and gritty location.
The trio is villains is really strong but apart from Trevelyan, the other two aren't very developed. Would have loved to get some more background/motivations behind Xenia and Ouromov.

+1
I enjoy Goldeneye quite a bit. It's my favorite Brosnan Bond movie. I think Pierce makes a fine debut as 007, although he doesn't quite make up for the loss of Dalton, and the plot and the pace of the film work fine for me. Judi Dench is outstanding as M, and I like the two gorgeous Bond Girls, especially Famke. The action scenes are mostly routine, but I don't have a problem with them (not even the oft-complained about ending of the PTS). The title song is pretty good, but overall I'm unimpressed by the soundtrack. Bottom line - a welcome return of the Bond films series that left me looking forward to more Brosnan as Bond. None of his subsequent films really measure up to Goldeneye, although TWINE comes close, mostly due to Brosnan's strong performance.
Agreed, except the last bit (I like TWINE more than GE).

I have to echo what you have said. Goldeneye is in my top 5 Bond films, mostly because of it's sentimental value. I think Pierce does a great job playing Bond. It is unfortunately that he was a little too 1990's male- but at the time he was completing with Hugh Grant and all of those other sensitive leading males. I have always thought that the atmosphere of "maleness" changed at the time and so did Bond. Dalton would not have flied (IMHO.) I agree with the Bond girls and M. They really carry the film.

Nice to know we're in agreement on this one!

Alec Trevelyan's motivations weren't all that hot either to be honest. Didn't ring true for me.

I can hang with this.

Does the term 'bitch slap' mean anything to you? TND was his YOLT, except that he didn't have to be turning Japanese. I really think so.

You Only Live Twice is more entertaining for me. That is despite Sean Connery's sub par performance, Bond's Japanese disguise. and a weak Blofeld. It is a guilty pleasure. Tomorrow Never Dies is guns, guns, and more guns. Bond was never more invincible. Paris Carver and Wai Lin leave me pretty cold (Aki and Kissy have the opposite effect). The only characters (apart from MI6) that I really warm to are Dr. Kaufman and Admiral Roebuck.
