It's basically the Moonraker plot shell except Germany/Britain is North/South Korea and nuclear missiles are solar lasers.

Re: Pros and Cons: The Spy Who Loved Me

Question: Who was the title of the film referring to?

Was Bond the spy who loved XXX or was XXX the spy who loved Bond?

53

Re: Pros and Cons: The Spy Who Loved Me

I guess coming from the Books angle, the spy in question was Bond.  ajb007/wink

...and Drax = Graves (taken to be English but actually a military officer from an unfriendly nation, who makes a lot of money very quickly and funds a scientific project ostensibly for benign reasons but actually for military purposes, becoming popular with the press then knighted by the Queen).

Krebs = Zao (his right hand man from his military past, still there in his new identity)

Frost = Brand (his right hand woman planted on him by UK security) Indeed, she was originally going to be called Gala Brand until it was decided that she would turn out to be a triple agent.

Bond and Drax/Graves battle at Blades (cards in the MR novel, swords in DAD) with real venom underneath the supposedly "friendly" game.

I'm sure there are further parallels.

I agree with you. I suppose it depends on the context, but the title refers to both Bond and Major Amasova. In "Nobody Does it Better", Carly Simon is singing about Bond with the lyric "the spy who loved me". Reversely -- in the teaser trailer -- Bond says "in this case... it's the spy who loved me" clearly referring to Anya.

Such a wonderful title for such a wonderful film; I'm grateful that Fleming gave EoN the rights to use it!

"The secret agent. The man who was only a silhouette..." -- Ian Fleming, Moonraker

Re: Pros and Cons: The Spy Who Loved Me

Fleming disliked the actual Story, hence why he only gave Permission for the Title to be used.

Even though Jaws is based on one of the two Villains in the Book, Slugsy and Horror.

Re: Pros and Cons: The Spy Who Loved Me

According to Steven Jay Rubin (in his book "The James Bond Films"), Broccoli told his writers that "The Spy Who Loved Me" was to be a Russian agent, ie Anya, who falls in love with Bond.

Re: Pros and Cons: The Spy Who Loved Me

Pros:

-Moore gives a fantastic performance.
-The disco bits in the score are fun to hear.
-Gilbert's direction is fantastic, arguably an improvement over his work in YOLT.
-Stromberg is an intimidating enough villain, even if he's no Scaramanga.
-Moore has good chemistry with Bach.
-Bach was a fine beauty in her day.
-The battle in the Liparus is great.

Cons:

-Stromberg wants a nuclear apocalypse so that he can live underwater with whoever else survives.  Not the greatest plot, but I can just think "this guy's a madman", and roll with it.

Overall, I love TSWLM, and give it a 10/10.

Re: Pros and Cons: The Spy Who Loved Me

^ Claude Renoir's cinematography would be my only con. I don't really like how this film looks. The colour is nice, but there's certainly a void between the look of TSWLM and MR. It's as if they didn't use tripods or dollys. To, it makes this film looks slightly dated over entries around the same time - almost like TB/YOLT.

TSWLM has always been in my top 10.

I like elements of it, just like I like elements of Serra's GE, Conti's FYEO. I think Hamlisch's Bond Theme is the best out of all the non-Barry composers. But the rest of the soundtrack just doesn't fit into the film that well.

LALD is one of the interesting, original scores like all the non-Barry dudes, but it just works so well cinematically - probably the closest to Barry.

Yes. Marvin Hamlisch, however, did write an amazing theme in 'Nobody Does it Better' and uses it well throughout the score. There are some very Barry-esque cues as well. The source cues for the Pyramids and Mojave Club are really cool. The disco cues are fantastic as well, but they date the film. If John Barry had scored this, I wonder if he would have given it a disco feel since he did that for parts of The Deep the same year. My biggest problem with the score is that it doesn't sound very unified. There are just so many different styles of music, though none are inappropriate. It would be great if the score could be released on an album some day since it's the only Bond score that has not at all been released. The music on the soundtrack album was instead arranged specifically for the album.

LALD and FYEO suffer more from "Lack-O-Barry" because the composers did not try to do the Bond sound that Hamlisch mostly attempted. Both films have fantastic scores, yet they detract from the Bond feel of the films.

Agree.

As much as I love TSWLM, the cinematography and the not-so-perfect score (though still good), degrade my overall ranking of the film.

While I like Hamlish's score, I always wonder...what if Barry had done it. My opinion on the film would instantly jump...maybe even a top 5 rank. I rank many Bond films a lot higher than I should because of Barry alone
