Re: Pros and Cons: Dr. No

I watched Dr No the other day - first movie in my Bondathon. Thoroughly enjoyed it, to my surprise. Brilliant to watch on blu ray.

Cons:
- Bond's attitude to Quarrel. And he's dismissive to people in general which I suppose is a character trait.
- No Barry score
- Ally tailing Bond for no reason instead of saying hello like a normal person (minor issue)
- The torture tunnel could've been something much more sinister...Dr No says he "hasn't finished with him", which isn't elaborated on in the final film but is in the book.
- Dr No's death is not very memorable compared to what happens in the books but is a sensible decision for a first entry.

Pros:
- Establishes all the Bond mannerisms which sadly do not appear much in later films. And has most if not all elements of the "Bond formula"
- Attention to detail. Shoes off when Trench is playing golf, opening new vodka when he knew his room got searched, Quarrel scared of the dragon so drinking rum on the way to Crab Key, pouring two shots of drink on the coffee table when waiting for Dent. Every thing Connery does, every movement is not an accident. He was told exactly how to behave here.
- The introductions of Dr No and of course Bond

Quality wise, one of the best. This will be hard to rank.

Re: Pros and Cons: Dr. No

I am re-watching all the movies and making a new league ladder under my present one - I shall watch them all in order of release (yes, even QOS  ajb007/lol ) which I detest.

DR NO: Last watched about 5 years ago.

Pros:

Titles
3 Blind Mice scenes
Casino
Bond - Moneypenny - M sequence
Hotel scene where Bond sets intrusion traps - hair on wardrobe etc.
Quarell - Leiter meeting
Dent in spider room
Spider on Bond
Miss Taro seduction
Shooting Dent
Crab Key scenery
Honey Ryder
Danger Sign
Swamp scenes
Dr No's lair
Dinner with Dr No
Tunnel sequence
Dr No fight
Model work explosion
Boat scene ending

Cons:

Music. I think Monty Norman was a poor composer and we have John Barry to thank for arranging the theme into something special. The incidental music is very weak.

Observations:

When Bond introduces himself as "Bond, James Bond" he is mimicking Sylvia Trench's line "Trench, Sylvia Trench" so do we have Sylvia to thank for the most famous line in the series?

Bond has been in the service for 10 years and M says casualties have fallen 40% since he has been in charge so does this mean that M is a more recent employee to the service than Bond is?

Miss Taro's address changes from 239 to 2171 from when she instructs him in voiceover the route to her house to when Bond orders the "taxi".

Conclusion:

A fabulous beginning to the saga and one which will surely rank high in the final table.

Yeah, well, sometimes nothin' can be a real cool hand.

Re: Pros and Cons: Dr. No

Dr No is an amazingly modern film, for its time. Compare it to many
Other late 50s or early 60s  thrillers, to see how the story grabs you by
The scruff of the neck and drives along, hardly letting up for a second.
The addition of Prof Dent, is brilliant and leads to one of the great cinema
Moments.  ajb007/wink
I also love the Ken Adam sets, the use of copper in the underground lair is
Remarkably colourful, and compliments the rough rock walls.
Joseph Wiseman is a great villain, his voice so emotionless, yet so commanding.

I saw that recently. He doesn't play it very well, or with much emotion.

Maybe this is exactly how he imagined the James Bond Theme.  ajb007/biggrin

I'm assuming the parts of the tune he doesn't play were John Barry's contributions. Or Norman just wasn't able to play those parts.

Re: Pros and Cons: Dr. No

IMHO Dr. No is THE perfect Bond movie.
It's small, it's colourful, it's true to Fleming, and it has Barry's theme.
FRWL was a bit tame, GF a bit OTT, and from there it just kept growing....

Dalton & Connery rule. Brozz was cool. Craig is too.

The attention to detail in DN is amazing and bond is the centre of the movie that's why I've ranked it high this tine, but there's others I enjoy more for the action etc

Re: Pros and Cons: Dr. No

Just watched the first half last night on BD (I started it late & didn't want to finish it sleepy), and the film just gets better with each viewing. The so-so incidental score no longer grates on me, and the plot is just perfect (A touch over the top, but just a touch- no 'save the world' nonsense in the first three). And Wiseman is easily my favourite villain.

Re: Pros and Cons: Dr. No

Pros:

-Possibly the greatest use of the "Bond, James Bond" line.  A fantastic kickoff for the series.
-The scene where Bond kills Dent is classic.
-Joseph Wiseman plays Dr. No well.
-We get to see Bond "roughing it", so to speak, like when he hides with Quarrel and Honey in the water (not sure if that was a river or pond).
-Great chemistry between Bond and Leiter.
-The dialogue is quite well-written.

Cons:

-Not too big on Honey Rider.  Yeah, she was the first main Bond girl (Sylvia Trench was technically the first Bond girl in the series), but Ursula doesn't really do much with her character (imo).  Let's be frank: she's been topped by at least several others.
-Feels more like something out of a detective novel than a spy movie.
-We see Dr. No late in the movie, which limits his impact.

I quite like Dr. No, and for now give it an 8/10, might give it a 9 with another viewing.

I don't find that a Con, in fact I think it  increases his impact since he's been built up and discussed before his entrance which causes anticipation. If the actor, writer and director don't pay off when the character finally appears then this technique falls flat- here, though, IMHO it works just fine.

Re: Pros and Cons: Dr. No

Pros:
Most of it.

Cons:
Monty Norman's score, especially for ripping off the theme from News at Ten for the tarantula-beating.

Wiseman is your favourite villain? No mean feat in a series of films renowned for such a great list of bad guys. What makes him stand out for you?

Another big plus in the film for me is Anthony Dawson as Professor Dent. He's a strangely eerie character and his death at the hands of Bond is one of the best in the series.

Wiseman had no pattern to follow- he created the character cold.
His sophisticated demeanour somehow successfully blended with his thuggish behaviour modification methods. Now I love Goldfinger, Scaramanga, Sanchez & Carver, but Dr. No just so singular to me...
