Re: Pros and Cons: Moonraker

Pros

Drax is a great villain and he gets some great dialogue (apart from the "unloved season" line.).

Great locations

It's a good looking Bond film.

Goodhead is a strong independant Bond girl and not a damsel in distress.

Bond goes to space. It's a first for the series

Jaws is back and i liked that he turned good.

Amazing score from John Barry

Cons

Jaws is a buffoon, compared to the cold demeanour he had in the previous film.

I'm not a fan of jump scares. I count three of them in the film

Lois Chiles sounds as if she's reading off a script.

The plot isn't original. It's taken from the previous film

Have you ever heard of the Emancipation Proclamation?"

Jaws is most certainly a buffoon in TSWLM as well. Not to the extent that he is in MR, but he does some stupid things in TSWLM like destroy the scaffolding at the temple and cause a mess to fall on him.

Re: Pros and Cons: Moonraker

I really love MR. It has Imo one of the better villians. It has one of the best Bond Girls. And I think it's one of Moore's best acted    outings. Space does not bother me one bit. It's something different for the series that stands out.

Re: Pros and Cons: Moonraker

Pros:
Great cinematography, score, production design.
Moore's effortless charm.
Very amusing dialogue including best double-entendre of the series.
Michael Lonsdale's hilariously dry villainy.

Cons:
Difficult for many Bond fans to enjoy as it's as far from Fleming as possible.
Corrine death scene is brilliant but completely out of sync with tone of the film.
Poor rear projection in cable-car sequence.

Re: Pros and Cons: Moonraker

Watched this last night for the first time in probably 20 years it was never a favourite of mine and holds a low position in my old ranking list.

Pros:
PTS up to the point where Jaws tries to fly.
Boat chase

Cons:
Hunting scene
Gondola sequence
Chang fight
Cable car
Space laser battle
Jaws - Dolly

Observations: Jaws is back from TSWLM and is even more stupid than ever. The plot is similar to TSWLM swapping locations to space from under the sea.

Conclusion:
Whereas TSWLM was a great Bond entry in the canon MR is more like Abbot & Costello Meet James Bond. Apart from the misjudged comedy elements almost everything else is just so bland - Barry's score is insipid even if it is a great improvement on TMWTGG - the gondola sequence is embarrassing - the Chang fight is just crass - the laser battle is just the TB finale in space and less exciting. Drax is dull, when compared to the villain in the book he should have been as good as Goldfinger. What I don't understand is that after the great characterisation of Bond by Roger in TSWLM all that is rejected for a silly comedy performance hardly worthy of Carry On Spying. I can recall seeing this in the cinema and thinking this could well be the end of Bond but unbelievably it made shedloads of dosh and the mould was cast until Roger hung up his shoulder holster  ajb007/crap  Well this is now last on my new list and I am thinking it may well stay there.

Yes, one of the greatest Bond scores. I think I place it third after TLD and OHMSS.

Indeed, one of the greatest Bond scores. I think I would also place it third, but after On Her Majesty's Secret Service and You Only Live Twice.

Because Bond shoots the sniper in the trees - Drax then knows he is rumbled for sure and should have had killed Bond instantly. I can accept lots of things that keep a movie going but it is absurdly illogical for Drax to keep the pretence going.

Drax was attempting to kill Bond in a clandestine way, and Bond caught him out - basically Bond and Drax have a silent "nice try" to each other. Yeah, it keeps the pretence going, but Drax at that point could not have tried to kill Bond in another way as this would've been too overt.

To me it's very similar to the way SC in Thunderball easily shoots the clay pigeon - he's playing with fire just being in the villains presence - it's Bond's way of demonstrating his ego.

Such good sport.

Re: Pros and Cons: Moonraker

Pros:

The last truly epic Bond in both scale and concept.
A good looking film.
A good score by Barry.
Some interesting Bond moments -- Moore stepping out of the G-force accelerator; his fight with Chang.
The third iteration of You Only Live Twice, yet somehow it doesn't seem tired.

Cons:

Too much camp.
Lois Chiles.
Michael Lonsdale, while imposing looking, is largely given little to do, although still more than most Bond villains after.
Too science-fictiony, though because of Star Wars, it didn't see so much so at the time.

Re: Pros and Cons: Moonraker

Pros:

* Possibly my favourite PTS ever, even more impressive considering that the level was sky high with the previous one. But it doubles down on TSWLM and succeeds. The parachute sequence in MR is heart stopping. And it was done for real, piece by piece, the old fashioned way.

*Roger Moore clearly in his prime, both physically and performance wise. With Connery long gone and TSWLM a box office smash, he confidently inhabits the character. And those 70s suits fit him like a glove.

*John Barry's score. Another key member of MR in his prime. From the arrrangement of the Bond theme in the gunbarrel and PTS to the space sequences, it has to be one of his best ever. Some of the cues are particularly good (the dogs chasing Corinne).

*Michael Lonsdale. Were Curt Jurgens fails, Lonsdale succeeds. The characters are similar, and yet Lonsdale is more believable and menacing with his understated performance.

* Lois Chiles. Although not as memorable as Barbara Bach, she comes close. There's a quirkiness to her that I always liked, she's stunning, and there's chemistry with Roger.

* The story. They managed make it current by using the space shuttle which was in the news back then, and the destruction of the ring of capsules around the earth, a nod to Star Wars and video games which everybody loved.

* Special Effects.- Without yielding to the ILM blackmail, the EON team managed to come up with really superb FX of their own, even getting an Academy Award nomination.

* "Frederick Gray! What a surprise. And in distinguished company, all wearing gas masks. You must excuse me, gentlemen, not being English, I sometimes find your sense of humor rather difficult to follow!" This always cracks me up. It's almost Montypython-esque. Lonsdale's deadpan delivery and Roger Moore's reaction are just great.

Cons.

* Title song.- boring, slow...One of the worst ever, meaning there's nothing memorable about it. Shirley Bassey sings it nice but without conviction.

* Jaws.- Ok, he was a great henchman on TSWLM, but falling in love in MR? and becoming a goody? come on, the guy was a killer, a 7 feet psychopath with steel teeth. A pure horror story monster. It's sad to see him suddenly see the bright side of life.

* The humour.- The nod to Close Encounters of the third kind is nice, but The magnificent seven theme? take it out. Pigeon turning its head? out too. Speaking of which...

* I could have done without the whole gondola turns hovercraft bit.  Just keep the gondola chase, that's cool. The hovercraft is overdoing it. I do like the humour, they just needed a little editing here and there.

I'm very fond of MR, probably because I saw it exactly at the right age, 12 years old. It was just fun fun fun for two hours. It's obviously TSWLM in outter space...if you saw TSWLM first, that is. For me, TSWLM was always MR underwater.

Jaws was def more scary in TSWLM , I found the scene where he kills Fekkesh creepy as a kid cuz you know he had no place to hide/defenseless , like Jaws was Dracula or something.

Re: Pros and Cons: Moonraker

After YOLT and TSWLM, it must have been tough to make a film with similar theme interesting. So MR shoots for pure fun even at the perils of appearing silly at times. It may not be a classic like the other two, but it accomplished its mission to entertain and set BO on fire.

The film is lavishly made. The PTS is among the best in the series. The locations are great. Drax gives a well measured performance. Jaws is back. Moore is in top form and the film appears to be tailored for him. Shirley Bissey also give an acceptable follow up to the Goldfinger and Diamonds Are Forever numbers.

This is a film that you would watch when you want to switch off your brain and have a good time!

Forgetting the terrible bondola and double-taking pigeon, and Jaws flapping his arms - the rest of the film IMO is not that silly.

At the time, the idea of the Space Shuttle was revolutionary in the sense it would be the bus that would take people to and from space and make it more accessible - I guess the success of the film revolved around two ideas 1) Space films were in vogue 2) The idea of easier space travel with the SS was aspirational but not that far-fetched.

Re: Pros and Cons: Moonraker

Pros:

-Solid performance from Moore.
-Great action sequences.
-A fun space battle.
-Lonsdale is great as Drax, and gives us a memorable villain.
-The return of the iconic Jaws.
-Holly Goodhead gives the impression of being a tough BG.
-Solid directing from Gilbert.
-Very good score.

Cons:

-The plot is basically a rehash of that in TSWLM, but in space.

Overall, I love MR, and give it a 9/10.

MR is a cracker Bond film, I can understand why people think the Space stuff is too far - but essentially it is very solid.

To me, I find Jaws a con. He's realistic, and taken a bit more seriously in TSWLM - but in MR, he's a joke of himself. Just like JW Pepper.

I rate Goodhead better than XXX, she's a bit more confident and better acted. Both are beautiful, but Lois Chiles just has this incredible look.
