Re: What are you Currently Reading?

I am having a break from Bond and reading American Psycho, I make a point to read it every year.

I just think it is a masterpiece of social commentary and satire in the mid/ late 80's.

I have also pre-ordered Thomas Ligotti's "Songs of a dead dreamer & Grimscribe" in the new "Penguin classics" edition, that will be my next read when it turns up this week.

Sorry, I probably should have said I do actually read it every year, and have for the last 6 years or so.

It is an extremely clever book, very well put together. Although if you are squeamish it may get under your skin a bit.

Re: What are you Currently Reading?

I just finished Casino Royale and LALD, but I take a quick pass from the Fleming novels to read Trigger Mortis. I'm enjoying it TM, although I just started it's already better dan Solo imo.

Re: What are you Currently Reading?

I have Trigger Mortis reserved for me at my library.  I'm going to need a book for a long domestic flight I'll be taking soon, which will involve the requisite stop-overs.  Was about to get a Kindle copy but would hate for the battery to drain without an outlet nearby.

Re: What are you Currently Reading?

I have just finished James Joyce's epic Ulysses. Long and confusing but also inspiring and mind blowing. I was surprised that I could actually finish its 700 pages and stream of consciousness paragraphs. And I have been told that I am in the minority, having completed it. Was thinking about rereading a Fleming novel, to relax afterwards but I was tempted by Julian Barnes' sense of an ending. The cover tells me that it won the Man Booker Prize back in 2011. So far it has some fanastic anecdotal high school stories and the progression of the main character becoming a man.

Re: What are you Currently Reading?

Still in Thunderball at the moment.  One of the biggest and best.

Re: What are you Currently Reading?

ajb007/martini  Infact Moonraker and Thunderball are two of my favourite Bond books.

Re: What are you Currently Reading?

At the mo, I am reading The Last Expedition - Captain Scotts journals from Antartica, Thunderbirds The Vault, and The Star Trek Chronology (first edition.)

I never seem to be able to just read one book over a timeframe!

Must pick up where I left off with the LOTR Triology too.

This is Thunderbird 2, how can I be of assistance?

I've read Trigger Mortis and it was good set in1957.   (a bit like Moonraker.)

I'm now reading the latest Jack Reacher book by Lee Child called Make Me.
It's good- but I've read all the 19 others- so the story formula can be similar.

Re: What are you Currently Reading?

I just finished You Only Live Twice that I found excellent but also a bit sad.

I haven't read the Bond (Fleming) novels in order but not to worry.  I still have four (OHMSS, GF, TSWLM and TMWTGG) to go for completion but unsure about the last two from the reviews I've read.

As for the short stories, I thought The Hildebrand Rarity was the pick of them.

After the Bond (Fleming) novels, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy will be next.

OHMSS I think will make you feel more sad. It did for me anyways.  ajb007/frown

Re: What are you Currently Reading?

"Shoot To Kill", by Steve Cole. About halfway through, and it's good stuff.

Re: What are you Currently Reading?

Just started Blood and Ashes by M Loeffelholz. Just the first chapter so far
but very impressive, good plot outlay and how a certain character  is dealt with
is funny and effective.  ajb007/martini

Persuader - a Jack Reacher book - I'm reading them in order of publication, I think this is #7 - I like Reacher he's a good character and Lee Child's writing and plotting improve from book to book.

Yeah, well, sometimes nothin' can be a real cool hand.

Re: What are you Currently Reading?

I'm reading The Spy Paramount by E. Phillips Oppenheim Published in 1935 originally- the blurb on the back made me grab it as it really is as good as it sounds.

Part of the blurb states:
This classic thriller - undoubtedly an influence on Ian Fleming's James Bond novels - now published for the first time since the 1930s. With its yachts and cocktail parties, it's steely hero and brutal assassins, and it's cinematic range across the cities of Europe, this is a gripping and sophisticated tale of a spy who saves the world.
