Topic: Which was better - SPECTRE vs ROGUE NATION

Rogue Nation, hands down.

Whilst SPECTRE had some good moments, it felt a bit unfinished in places, such as the CGI and felt a bit.....underwhelming, it didn't have anything that would make me love it. Rogue Nation, on the other hand, felt like a good thriller and executed the comedy perfectly (I felt some bits in SPECTRE were either out of place or fell flat). Rogue Nation was also much more impressive, with more memorable stunts (SPECTRE really lacked in having impressive stunts, even the car chase felt simple and didn't really have many moments that made it stand out). Rogue Nation even had a better PTS (look, I loved the one in SPECTRE, probably the best part of the film and it looked beautiful, but Tom Cruise hanging off the side of the plane was more of an impressive feat).

I really enjoyed Rogue Nation, more than I thought I would in fact, but I could't help but think that it was a poor Bond copy when watching it. I would have to say Spectre.

+ 1 SPECTRE all the way having now seen it but RG came a close second for me

Cheers :-)

It's obvious the action sequences in Rogue Nation were better than Spectre's. The car chase through Rome had no energy or bite to it at all, it was just two nice cars driving not particularly quickly past nice architecture.

I don't get out to the cinema as much as I'd like; I enjoy the MI films very much...but they're not James Bond. I saw the first one on the big screen, but have seen the rest on video at my leisure, and this will be the case with RN when it hits disc or streaming services. I don't follow MI on fan sites.

I'll see SP a minimum of 3 times in the cinema; one of them in IMAX.

Guess which I'm likely to prefer?  ajb007/bond

Re: Which was better - SPECTRE vs ROGUE NATION

I saw Rogue nation during the summertime and I enjoyed it very much.  For me SPECTRE is better.

Now are any of Daniel Craigs previous Bond films better than any of the three Mat Damon Bourne films I'm not so sure as those films took film making into a different place which Bond has had to copy unfortunaely not the other way round.

Will the new Jason Bourne movie next year be better than SPECTRE I would hazard a guess it will be.

It's all subjective and about opinions in the my World I have a place for the Mission Impossible films, the Bourne movies and of course my favourite James Bond.

MI and Bourne are both great franchises---chips off the old block ajb007/cool  There's no doubt that Bond's children keep the old man on his toes...but they'll always be his children.

Rogue Nation topped Bond in a few ways, especially the stunts. Bond was once a leader in stunts, but with the last decade Mission: Impossible has been the top. Though they copied the opera scene from Quantum of Solace, they did it better.

How do you measure stunts? Is there a little man underneath with a tape measure?

I'll ask again. How do you measure stunts?

So QoS does the opera scene first. Interesting?

Fleming's novels don't have stunts, so why should I even bother...

Oh I totally agree and don't forget the Mat Helm films all Bond wanna-be's.

The difference with the Bourne films though in particular was they were the first films to show that realistic way of fight sequences with him using anything he can get his hands on pens, pencils etc.

CR adopted the same techniques for the fight sequences and some may say Bond ripped Bourne off.

Another technique which was used in the Bourne Supremancy and Ultimatum was the technique of putting the audience inside the car whilst its being crashed into etc, during the car chase sequences.

QOS copied the exact same technique, and copied Bourne with the same editing style.

Bond is my favourite but the new Bourne film is something to look forward to whilst 3 years pass before the next Bond movie arrives, I believe it's out sometime in 2016..

Re: Which was better - SPECTRE vs ROGUE NATION

Haven't seen Spectre yet, but it seems to me the stunts in later films have been few and far between.  Sure, Quantum had action, but not really much in the way of stunts like the Moore and Dalton films. No real breathtaking scenes like the ski jump or plane fight in OP. Like to see Rogue Nation, though. The last M:I film I saw was the 3rd one.

Re: Which was better - SPECTRE vs ROGUE NATION

I'm actually struggling to pick. But then again I still feel that MI:RN was a better film all round. It was paced better for me.

The stunts have been really impressive in recent years. The last film alone had Tom Cruise hanging off the side of a plane 4000ft in the air. He jumps on while it's moving and doesn't let go. This is shown in one shot aswell. No different angles. The scene where he escapes from being handcuffed by climbing up a pole and he then flips off. The car chase which leads into the motorbike chase is superbly done. While Spectres car chase falls flat IMO.

For me I enjoyed Rogue Nation more than any other releases this year. I think Spectre could of done with some more editing. But still enjoyed it.

Re: Which was better - SPECTRE vs ROGUE NATION

I'll finish by saying SPECTRE is in my top three Bond films and James Bond apart from an odd release here and there is the only time I go to the Cinema.

I love Bond, more than Bourne, however having said that I still enjoy Matt Damon as Bourne and will definately go to his next outing next year sometime.

I can't wait to see SPECTRE again, but kid free so it will have to be after the half term holidays over here in the UK.

Re: Which was better - SPECTRE vs ROGUE NATION

Since "better" is a relative term, or as Bond would say "it's all a matter of perspective" on who views the two franchises.

I for one enjoy both and since I have to pick between the two, I would pick the Bond franchise. Though both are escapist entertainment, the Bond movies have an elegance and heritage about them, and it's this legacy that they borrow from, time and time again. There is a huge difference between the Mission Impossible tv series and movies as a result the movies don't follow the original formula which has lead to a divide between fans of the tv show and those of the movies. Bond fans are a "Ride or Die" bunch.

Having said that I would like to see the stunt team in the Bond movies replaced so better action sequences can be put together in the Bond movies. My definition of "better" is truly jaw dropping, adrenaline pumping, vertigo inducing sequences. In that department there is no competition, the Mission Impossible movies keep raising the bar. Ones that jump to mind off the bat, are the free cliff climbing opener from MI2, to running down the Burge Khalifa, to hanging off a plane wing in one take, to the hard to breathe while watching under water sequence, to finally that crazy bike chase without a helmet in Rogue Nation.

Everyone's opinion will be different but my reality is that though at a time the Bond franchise was seen as an industry leader, they seem to be in the middle of spy genre entertainment spectrum today, between Bourne movies which I would put at the top and the Mission Impossible movies in third place. All in all what this means to the fan of the spy genre is a wonderful variety and that never is a bad thing.

I can imagine Sam Mendes pitching that scene to Babs and MG.

Babs Broccoli
So Bond is escaping the bad guys and there is a chase?

Sam Mendes
Yes, it's gonna be amazing. The best car chase in the franchise.

MG Wilson is getting excited, he's almost frothing at the mouth:

MG Wilson
Tell us more, Sammy boy!

Sam Mendes
Well, it's set in Rome at night and it's sports car chase.

MG Wilson
Rome, eh? The land of ice-cream and sex-mad Italians! So what happens in Rome? Bond and evil henchman have a thrilling car chase through traffic and carmageddon follows?!

Sam Mendes
Well... it's more like two nice cars driving not particularly quickly past nice architecture.

Babs Broccoli
Wow, brilliant, Sam. It sounds incredible! You're a genius!

Re: Which was better - SPECTRE vs ROGUE NATION

Rogue Nation isn't as good as a Mission Impossible movie as SPECTRE is as a Bond movie. Brian De Palma did 'intrigue' brilliantly in the first MI movie and John Woo did 'action' brilliantly in the second one; since then, the franchise has never really reached the same heights. Daniel Craig is a far more effective centre of gravity than Tom Cruise, who now looks past it...
