Topic: Bring it back in one piece!

Ok, I've been thinking about this ever since I got the SP Blu Ray. Q says to Bond, about the DB5, "I told you to bring it back in one piece......" Or something like that. Wait, what? When did this happen? Did Q even know Bond was using the DB5 in SF?

But now, as I was writing that, I've just had another thought. Is it a reference? Is it almost a fourth wall break? Is it a reference to Llewlyn's Q telling Bond off about damaging his equipment?!

Re: Bring it back in one piece!

I think in Skyfall he asks that the equipment be returned " in one piece" before walking off.

“I didn’t lose a friend, I just realised I never had one.”

Re: Bring it back in one piece!

It was just a joke. Q did not give Bond the car in SF, and he had no idea Bond had this car. But TP is right that Q said to bring the equipment back in one piece. This just wasn't something Q was asking Bond to bring back since he didn't give it to Bond. If Q did give it to Bond it would have had a tracking system. Bond's whole reason for driving the car was because it wasn't a company car. Bond driving off in the car at the end of SP when he's no longer on the job proves that it's still Bond's personal car. I just assume that Q was fixing it for Bond as a favour.

Re: Bring it back in one piece!

Oh no, not the DB5 argument again... ajb007/rolleyes

It's not Bond's personal car.  It belongs to MI6.  If it was Bond's own car then why would Q say: "I told you to bring it back in one piece, not bring back one piece"?  Also, why would he go to Q at the end of Spectre and ask for it - if it's his?

Re: Bring it back in one piece!

On the three screenings  I watched in the cinema, the line got a big laugh. So
in my world, it was a big success. ajb007/biggrin , I don't go much deeper than that.

“I didn’t lose a friend, I just realised I never had one.”

Re: Bring it back in one piece!

It was a very funny line, made funnier by Q's stupid laugh at his own crap joke that no one else in MI6 found funny.

Re: Bring it back in one piece!

ajb007/cheers  Yes, I was laughing at Q's reaction to his joke. He thought it was the funniest thing, until
Bond gave him a dirty look. Even Tanner quickly stopped laughing.  ajb007/biggrin

Because it was Bond's car. If it belonged to Q-branch, why would they give the car to an inactive agent?

Correct, nothing deeper.  It's a reference to the running Q joke in the series.

"...the purposeful slant of his striding figure looked dangerous, as if he was making quickly for something bad that was happening further down the street." -SMERSH on 007 dossier photo, Ch. 6 FRWL.....

Bond wins it in Casino Royale privately.  He does not get issued the car by Q.

What it sounds like is a legitimate plot hole.  Q would not have been employed yet to outfit Bond's car with the gadgets in the first place -- he only meets Bond for the first time in Skyfall.  Yet the line in Spectre assumes that Q has already worked on the car.  (The gadgets themselves are an issue, though I suppose one could assume that Dimitrious had them installed.)  The timeline of Skyfall to Spectre also suggests not enough time has passed for the car to have been repaired and destroyed yet again for the line to make sense.

The line is meant as a joke, but it's built on an illogical premise.  Coupled with just letting Bond have the car at the end suggests the writers not surprisingly made a plot hole error.  What would have made more sense was for Q to say, "I believe I said to bring things back in one piece.  Not one piece."  As it stands, the combination of the faulty line and the ending suggest the writers just forgot what transpired in Skyfall and Casino Royale.

Who knows?  But I don't understand how that is germane to the discussion.  It's still Bond' private car, as indicated by it being in storage with his personal belongings, as opposed to separating it as government property.   Even if it literally is a different DB5 -- that somehow we're supposed to believe he acquired an identical model later for some unknown reason -- it's still treated as Bond's personal property.

Re: Bring it back in one piece!

Are you legally allowed to have deadly s**t in your car in the UK?
In America you can go shopping with a machine gun, but you can't have one concealed in your car's grill. You could get a ticket for that.

Dalton & Connery rule. Brozz was cool. Craig is too.

How do you know it's Bond's personal belongings in the lock up?
How did M know about the armaments?

I still stand by my original premise that it is a mothballed MI6 DB5 that Q knew about and allowed Bond to use.  There is clearly a period of time between Bond 'kidnapping' M and arriving at the lock up (day to night).  In that time I believe Bond has made a call to Q who has let him use the DB5.

This then fits in with Q's joke in Spectre which indicates that he allowed Bond to take it.  Q allows Bond to take it again at the end of the film.  It belongs to MI6.

The LHD DB5 was probably E-Bayed between QoS and SF due to its increased value.  Certainly no one would faff about with converting it to RHD and then getting an age related registration plate when the DVLA has you jumping through these hoops:

DVLA can only recognise your vehicle as a reconstructed classic vehicle if it meets certain criteria. It must be:
built from genuine period components from more than one vehicle, all over 25 years old and of the same specification as the original vehicle
a true reflection of the marque

The appropriate vehicle owners’ club for the vehicle type (‘marque’) must inspect the vehicle and confirm in writing that it:
has been inspected
is a true reflection of the marque
is comprised of genuine period components all over 25 years old

They must also give manufacture dates for the major components.

DVLA will assign an age-related registration number to the vehicle based on the youngest component used.

New or replica parts

Your vehicle won’t get an age-related registration number if it includes new or replica parts. DVLA will give your vehicle a ‘Q’ prefix registration number. Your vehicle must pass the relevant type approval test to get a ‘Q’ prefix registration number.

Re: Bring it back in one piece!

He has the tricked-out DB5 in Skyfall because Sam Mendes had the toy as a kid. That is literally all the thought that went into it, so you'll never find the hidden answer, guys!

ajb007/lol  I think that's the answer.
