It's not Bond's personal car.  It belongs to MI6.  If it was Bond's own car then why would Q say: "I told you to bring it back in one piece, not bring back one piece"?  Also, why would he go to Q at the end of Spectre and ask for it - if it's his?

Bond wins it in Casino Royale privately.  He does not get issued the car by Q.

What it sounds like is a legitimate plot hole.  Q would not have been employed yet to outfit Bond's car with the gadgets in the first place -- he only meets Bond for the first time in Skyfall.  Yet the line in Spectre assumes that Q has already worked on the car.  (The gadgets themselves are an issue, though I suppose one could assume that Dimitrious had them installed.)  The timeline of Skyfall to Spectre also suggests not enough time has passed for the car to have been repaired and destroyed yet again for the line to make sense.

The line is meant as a joke, but it's built on an illogical premise.  Coupled with just letting Bond have the car at the end suggests the writers not surprisingly made a plot hole error.  What would have made more sense was for Q to say, "I believe I said to bring things back in one piece.  Not one piece."  As it stands, the combination of the faulty line and the ending suggest the writers just forgot what transpired in Skyfall and Casino Royale.

The car (DB5) that Bond wins in CR has a blue Bahamas number plate and is left hand drive.(also the DBS's in CR and QOS.)
In Skyfall the DB5 he gets from his lock-up garage is RHDrive and Reg-BMT216A . (which is the 60s GF and TBall car number.)

Then in 1995's Goldeneye there's a sister pool car with Reg -BMT 214A.
Check the Corgi toy models for confirmation as well !

So I think James Bond has had two RHDrive DB5s and one LHDrive DB5 from the poker game in the Bahamas.

cheers, Bleuville.    P.S.-the story timeline is muddled ,as we know.

Re: Bring it back in one piece!

The problem is we have nothing onscreen to confirm it either way.  Given the sloppiness of the writing, I'm more inclined to believe they just bungled it by intending it to be the same car but getting another model for the actual filming, thinking no one would notice.

But regardless, we're still left with the problem of it being Bond's personal property.

That's so true.  But it's that sloppiness that leads to debates like this!

We will all have our own interpretation of it.  I'm just presenting my (overwhelmingly brilliant  ajb007/lol  ) case for it being an MI6 car.

It's fun to speculate, but one might as well wonder how Bond has a 2012 N Peal sweater, limited edition (and altered) To Ki To Barbour jacket, and C&J Islays waiting for him at the childhood home he hadn't been to in 30 years. (Yeah, yeah, they were in the boot of the DB5, of course...)

In a better constructed film, these sorts of errors would be less likely to happen.  The car issue therefore gets magnified.  To use a car metaphor, it's like when purchasing a Chevy.  One expects the doors to not fit right or the ergonomics to be poor.  It's a Chevy.  But when purchasing an Aston Martin, would expect these issues to be resolved.  If the hood deviates in symmetry by a couple of inches, we notice.   If Aston Martin were producing cars with the same slapdash quality as an American production car, we'd wonder how it could justify the hundreds of thousands of dollars price.

It would be cool!  But I'll be honest -- I'm not crazy about the quality and styling of a lot of modern sports cars.  The Corvette doesn't do much for me.  But I'm a fan of the classic Corvettes.

Design by wind tunnel delivers superb aerodynamics but tends towards homogeneity which smooths out eccentricity and flair for me at least. I can get off on the efficiency but it does not stir the soul.

Re: Bring it back in one piece!

It is all good clean fun.  Remember in Skyfall M says, you still have this?  Well if it is a company car, with weapons, you mean the quartermaster lost track of it?  I don't put any emphasis into it other than it is a joke.  The DB5 was a company car in the books and the early movies. Bond had a choice of the Jag or the DB5.  Why would MI6 put all that money into a privately owned car, that Bond won in a game.  So I see this as just playing with the whole Bond history.

Bond: "But who would want to kill me, sir?"
M: "Jealous husbands, outraged chefs, humiliated tailors . . . the list is endless."

Government agencies make public money disappear all the time, so why not an expensive car?  ajb007/biggrin

In all seriousness though, I agree entirely, "It is all good clean fun."

I still stand by my original premise that it is a mothballed MI6 DB5 that Q knew about and allowed Bond to use.  There is clearly a period of time between Bond 'kidnapping' M and arriving at the lock up (day to night).  In that time I believe Bond has made a call to Q who has let him use the DB5.

If Bond had made a call to Q in that time, M would have been in the car and heard him make the call. So why would she at first make the joke about hiding in the garage?

Re: Bring it back in one piece!

Here's how I see the DB5 situation in the Craig movies:

Bond won a DB5 in CR that he later sold.

Then, between QoS and SF, he buys an old car that MI6 had in storage. A car MI6 had given to an agent in the 60's.

That way, M would know of the car's existence, but Bond would have got it before Q started working at MI6.

Then when Bonds stuff had been sold, the DB5 was simply left in the garage, waiting to be moved.

Bond then asked Q, as a friend, to repair the DB5 (or essentially build a replica one, because apparently only the steering wheel was left).

Then it being all done by the end of SP is beyond me. Q basically had to build a whole new car, and he finished it in supposedly a few months?

Re: Bring it back in one piece!

Just in case ,if any of you out there are interested ,the lock up  (my dads old garage) used in Skyfall ,to hide the Aston is in Deptford London ,If you want to see it on google earth ,type in Childers street Deptford London ,and on the map you will see a a junction with  Abinger grove .Go to the Earth view key ,and you will get the real street scene  .You will see on the corner ofChilders street a  pub painted blue ,called the Lord Palmerston , this is where Millwall supporters go pre match for a  beer . drag your mouse and keep the pub on the right side ,and you will see a double arch in the back ground .Go towards the arches and turn  immediately right ,here is the alley where the DB5 was stashed ,I hope you find this useful ,and would like to hear if any of you looked this up .
My dad ran his workshop there for a number of years ,and I used to help him out on days off ect ,and we would have the odd beer in that pub . ajb007/biggrin never in a million years did we ever think that one day this would be a glamorous Bond location  ajb007/lol The only Bond connection we had came in a mug with chimps on it  ajb007/smile (think about it )
