Topic: Garbage's TWINE: a classic?

I've always loved Garbage's The World Is Not Enough, IMO I would place it within the top ten title songs easily - I'd also rate it the best Bond title song since A View To A Kill.

It has it all. It's sultry, sexy and rocky. It has the perfect Arnold balance of orchestra, guitar and electronic. Manson's voice is stunning and above all, the lyrics make sense in the context of the film. Clearly it helped that Don Black was involved, but Arnold's overall talent shines in this and throughout the soundtrack - which features some of the most beautiful orchestral arrangements out of all films.

Re: Garbage's TWINE: a classic?

It's a good song, it's a good Bond song but there are many better and quite a few worse so I'd put it in the upper middle rank.
I love Arnold's work on the slower softer parts of the score ("Elektra's Theme" in its different guises) though only some of the action cues appeal to me.

Re: Garbage's TWINE: a classic?

Definitely a classic Bond song in my eyes (or ears). I've tried to compile a best Bond song list over the years, but I realise there are so many great themes, with only a handful of mediocre or simply 'good' tracks, that I can never order them. We've been pretty lucky over the years.

Arnold's score is amongst my favourites too.

I love a good Bond ballad,  and TWINE fits the bill for me.   ajb007/martini

I also love Only Myself to Blame, and despite the great Bond theme at the end of TWINE, part of me wishes OMTB played over the credits.  ajb007/bond

The name Garbage sums up this title song very aptly  ajb007/biggrin

Yeah, well, sometimes nothin' can be a real cool hand.

Re: Garbage's TWINE: a classic?

I think it's easily the best main theme (and the only one I really care for) since John Barry left, but that doesn't make it a classic.

Re: Garbage's TWINE: a classic?

I think one of the best modern Bond themes, it is probably my favourite Arnold theme because it has a good mix of old and modern style but isn't as pastiche-60s styled as Surrender. Shirley Manson's vocal performance matches the song really well. Overall, I'd rank it mid-table in the Bond themes, so not quite a classic, but a strong entry.

Re: Garbage's TWINE: a classic?

It's definitely one of my favourites, it beautifully derives from the great Bond song tradition and carries it into the new century. Very near the top for me, if not at the top, along with Sheryl Crow.

Good to see a little love for Crowe's Tomorrow Never Dies too. Very sultry and jazzy, and I've always felt the lyrics are from Paris' perspective, which adds another layer to its context.

In fact, Goldeneye, Tomorrow Never Dies, Surrender and The World Is Not Enough are just as good as A View to a Kill, Live and Let Die, You Only Live Twice, Diamonds Are Forever, Goldfinger and Thunderball.

I love the opening of the song, the way it starts is excellent - but there's really something wrong with the way Crowe starts the chorus. It's almost as if she's struggling to sing that type of song.

It's a shame, because everything else is so right about the song.

You cannot really be serious to compare that dross to all time Bond classics? Please tell me you are joking - is it April 1st?

Love it. It's probably in my top 5 Bond songs if I had to make a list.

I thought it would have been better had it remained Orchestral instead a crossover for MTV.

TWINE is far from my favorite Bond film, but I still love the song. ajb007/martini

Re: Garbage's TWINE: a classic?

I've always liked the song. There's a subtle difference in some of the arrangement over the titles to that of the soundtrack album which I think is better. Perhaps if the song were credited to Shirley Manson rather than her band, Garbage people would take it more seriously.

Re: Garbage's TWINE: a classic?

It's a good song.  The best of Brosnan's films.  Not sure it's a classic but I like it.

Re: Garbage's TWINE: a classic?

The world is not enough title song is no way a classic bond song no where near!

Re: Garbage's TWINE: a classic?

It's not my favourite. But it is absolutely under-appreciated. Love also how David Arnold uses the tune within the film's score.
I love how it begins while Brosnan hurts his shoulder in the opening.

I'd definitely put it in the top 10 for me. Had the pleasure of hearing them play it live back in August and it gave me chills. So seductive and powerful hearing it live.
