From Russia With Love briefcase knife

Hello, Im working for a small manufacturing company and we've been tossing around the idea of doing a limited run of the attache knife in FRWL. The question is would anyone be interested in these or would it be a waste of time and money>>>

Where are you based ? what were you thinking of making it out of ? it would be nice to have one made out of steel as others have produced aluminium copies in the past.

Our own Texas007 made beautiful, unique balanced stands to hold replica FRWL knives. He may have some left, along with some knife replicas - but from memory, they all sold out in the past.

Stunning stand counterbalances with the weight of the knife.

Yes the knife will be exactly like the movie knife. Unlike the SD knife it won't have a hole drilled in the guard and it will be steel not aluminum.

I have Texas007's counterbalance FRWL knife. It's a great piece. I also have the FRWL briefcase with the two knives that come with it plus an additional set of three or four knives from S.D. Studios.

What I would really like is a FRWL knife with an actual cutting edge. Sounds like the steel one might be the ticket. However, I think you'd still need the hole to make it look accurate.

Agreed! Without the hole in the guard it would not be accurate to the film version.

As far as we were told and by screen captures the movie knife did not have a hole in the guard, SD did that to make their version of the slide work. I believe their knife was also thicker 1/4? If anyone has one of the replica knives and would like to measure the thickness possibly Im wrong about that .The movie knife was 3/16ths.

Well that screen grab has the hole in the guard! It's a bit blurry, but looks to me like it's on the downward edge

I know it's hard to see even in the enlargement but the hole IS there. I am showing a side-by-side comparison of the actual prop made by Bert Luxford and I highlighted the spot you can see the hole.
When Steve was making the replica, David Worrall was contacted and he placed the knife on a scanner and sent Steve a photo of the knife (not what you see above) --Ed

Hmmmm, boy I'm torn here. Im not sure thats a hole in the guard, if anyone has a clear screen grab of the knife flat where theres no shadows I'd love to see it because Im not seeing a hole in the guard anywhere, certainly not like the repros out there. Here a shot of the prototype according to the designing 007 museum. again, no hole.

Ok, well these screen grabs answer the question, the knife that pops out of the case definitely does not have a hole drilled in the guard, so thats the way we will be making it.

    Whoa take a breath spectreman1......

Firstly I wouldn't discount anything that Ed (thespyboys11) says. He has after all handled the original case and also researched these things over many years, albeit it may have been with the display wooden blade added post filming, Ed would most surely have researched the the locking mechanisim within the case. I do have Ed's excellent tome regarding the case at home, if I can easily lay my hands on it I will look. Now although the 'hole' is difficult to pick out in post #27, there is definitely something there. Now because it doesn't show up well ie it's very dark, I would postulate that the hole doesn't penetrate all the way through thus allowing the locking mechanism to operate and also not showing up in the screen grabs you have added in post #29. I would interested in this explanation being debated prior to manufacture, although adding a partial or full hole post manufacture would be possible this would depend on whether you intend to plate or polish the finished knife. As Dave Worral is known to have handled the 'original' blade it may be worth touching base with him. Just my take on it.

No, don't get me wrong here. Im not discounting anyone's expertise on this subject, I'm sure they all know much more than I do about the subject I'm just going on what I see in the screen grabs. Im not a movie prop expert, what we do is build custom knives. Im sure there were quite a few prop knives used in production of FRWL, clearly some with pinholes drilled others not, either way it makes little difference to us as what were interested in is reproducing the "wooden" knife you see popping out of the case as a functional dagger. We also will be able to offer the knife in an attache that will pop out, for this too there will be no need to drill the guard on the piece. After looking closely to these screen grabs I think we'll come as close as you can get to what it was "supposed to be"
