Topic: Just a thought about NTTD

hi
I have a conflict with the marketing around the new Bond movie (music, plot, posters). Perhaps I am old school but they are selling the movie like a Romance-Action-Drama. Bond shouldn't be drama or romance, IN MY OPINION, it should be a SPY-ACTION film with, maybe, a little romance.  Bond is merciless, international, maybe a little snob, and I don't feel anything like that in the last 2 films...

Either way, I will still support the film and consume all the merchandise available... but I am glad that the Craig era is over.

Just an opinion...

The way I see it is, we've only seen ~5% of the film through photos and footage. There may be a whole lot of spy action we don't know of yet. I do want to see a bit more detective work from DC's Bond though.

Always have an escape plan. Mine is watching James Bond films.

Interesting perspective. I feel like it has a lot to do with the reasonably new idea of Bond being in a relationship now to span 2 films. Not sure if we’ve seen this before, and if so, not often. Ditto the return of one of the villains (Blofeld). Personally, there’s some emotional ‘gravity’ to this that I’m looking forward to. I love the higher stakes. To me that’s preferable to starting each film ‘cold’, with new missions and all new villains.

Not in such a prominent way, but the idea goes way back....

Well played sir.
The lack of depth in my 007 knowledge deserves to be exposed. Ha.  ajb007/martini

Not my intention, Snorpley, but you're welcome.  ajb007/smile

Re: Just a thought about NTTD

I think Trench is a different type of role. More of a recurring face but she didn’t have a great deal of character. She’s only present when Bond receives the call in FRWL. But I do agree I’d like to see more investigating and genuine spy work being done. Would be a good direction to go with the next incarnation.

Tradecraft has never played a large role in the Bond films--or novels for that matter, which is odd given Fleming's experience with the spy world.

All correct, JB1106340, but she does meet Snorpley's criterion.

Some extra info-
In Fleming Tiffany Case gets mentioned, though doesn't appear, in the next novel (FRWL) as Bond explains to M how their relationship ended. Mary Goodnight initially appears as 007's secretary a few times before graduating to the female lead in TMWTGG but that's not germane. Vesper and Tracy obviously rate posthumous mentions after their respective stories. Solitaire gets a quick namecheck in DN, as does Honey in TMWTGG.

Generally you are correct. It’s explored more in the short stories than the full novels. FAVTAK, Risico, TLD, FYEO, and even Octopussy all feature elements of it.

I’ve always thought the concept behind Paris Carver’s character was a good one, although the execution was lacking. I’d love to see them try something like that again after the reboot.

it deserves to be treated by carefully rewatching all 24 films in sequence in the remaining weeks before Bond25 premieres. Dr Potts's orders!

Re: Just a thought about NTTD

The element of NTTD that I am least looking forward to is Bond's relationship with Madeleine. Although I like Lea Seydoux and know that she can act, I found the character very weak in SPECTRE and I'm disappointed that they've chosen to bring her back. I'm hoping that I'm pleasantly surprised, but I don't think Madeleine stands well against Vesper, Severine, or Lucia.

Re: Just a thought about NTTD

Is it just me paying more attention, but is NTTD getting more pre-release buzz than SPECTRE? On second thought, may be it just feels that way because EON, despite the very difficult start of production has done a much better job of limiting negative buzz unlike SPECTRE with the dreaded Sony leaks?

It seems they have more partnerships this time and have done more marketing, but I don’t have any numbers to prove that. That brings more buzz along with it.

Whatever one might think of the song, bringing Billie Eilish on board to do the theme song has been a huge promotional shot in the arm. To a lesser extent, Zimmer coming on board to do the score has also appeared to generate positive buzz as he comes pretty much with his own publicity/PR machine and is a much more recognizable "name" to the general public as far as film composers typically are.
Zimmer appears to like to "go on the road" and perform his big scores in concert which also helps promote the film.
