Topic: NTTD DB5 Car & Driver Article

For those of you who love cars and Bond as much as I do.

What particularly interested me is it appears the NTTD stunt cars are powered by BMW S54 straight 6's. (The same engine as my 2004 M3 ajb007/martini )

Some great photos of the car included in the article as well.

Well Daniel Craig was overheard telling Prince Charles that the DB5 was a BMW underneath all those months ago when he did the set tour, and a BM 6-cylinder is a very logical engine for a stunt car: very torquey and revvy- ideal to get the wheels spinning. Those DB5s are likely built on  3 series or Z4 running gear, I'd guess.
I'm not sure why they're not keen to say: maybe because the deal was with Aston rather than BMW? There was no sheepishness about saying how the Die Another Day Astons were constructed from Mustangs and Explorers; I guess because they were all part of the Ford group at the time.

Sadly the link doesn't seem to work as it's been shortened. Hopefully this will work:

Re: NTTD DB5 Car & Driver Article

Interesting that the Pistonheads article says that the 'real' DB5 there on that day was the Goldfinger continuation prototype: so a brand new DB5, and the first time we've seen one the new Goldfinger cars as far as I know.

Oops thank you for finding the full link.

I do recognize the shifter in the DB5 pictured as the same as my e46 M3. I believe that is a clear giveaway.

Ah cool! The Pistonheads piece mentions the gear lever as being very recognisable, so there you go! That they’ve got a load of E46s shows that BMW weren’t officially engaged I guess: must’ve been fun finding that many old M3s!
It’s a brilliant car; a friend of mine used to have one. You must have lots of fun! ajb007/smile

Great video of 6 of the best Bond cars and featuring the definitely-not-a-BMW DB5 from the new film:

Re: NTTD DB5 Car & Driver Article

Plenty of opportunity for some clever YouTube editor to make a Bond vs Bond chase scene using the footage from that video! You could splice the Bonds in easily ajb007/smile

There's a video on YouTube that has something similar. Not sure if I'm allowed to post since it has clips from all the movies. Is it ok to post? (I'm sure most of us have seen it)

Some people would complain even if you hang them with a new rope

There is, but that one would work better as they're all in the same place, and you even get to see Bond's DB5 overtaking Bond's DB5! ajb007/smile

Nothing to do with NTTD really(!), but here's Aston revealing their new Goldfinger car properly:

Very cool......seems like the only way you can get get a proper manual gear box these days in a "new" Aston Martin.

Ha! I hadn't really thought of that. They're all semi autos now?

I did see one of their DB4GT continuations up close last year and it really is an amazing piece of work. You can barely tell it from an original, especially as they've all been restored to within an inch of their lives and look brand new anyway.

Re: NTTD DB5 Car & Driver Article

The little gadget control panel on the Vantage is a really fun touch! It's probably the most Bond-focused special edition they've done.
Also I think it's the best looking version of this Vantage they've done- the chrome really lifts it.

Interesting that these are being revealed now: considering how close we got to the original release date of NTTD how come they weren't revealed earlier in the year? Or has the film being pushed back given them time to develop these?

These Bond models are always very cool but that being said:
Now for some cranky old guy car buff curmudgeon stuff: Not that I could ever remotely afford an Aston Martin but could they please find it within themselves to offer one of their current production models the option of a proper manual gearbox (and preferably one that actually shifts well with short throws and proper gaits).

Re: NTTD DB5 Car & Driver Article

They've still got a few DB5s available with full manual! ajb007/smile

Re: NTTD DB5 Car & Driver Article

One option that is likely to be popular among Bond fans is the availability of a ski rack and skis, as the V8 Vantage had in the 1987 007 hit.
Wrong film, wrong car brand, wrong colour and of course wrong leading actor in the role of 007! .....apart from that spot on, Bloody hell fire!!  ajb007/insane

Re: NTTD DB5 Car & Driver Article

The Vantage in TLD did have skis and their struts did have yellow and black stripes on them, as these do.  Unsurprisingly Aston aren’t offering skis which actually protrude from the car, no. Fairly sure the rocket motor button won’t do anything either! ajb007/biggrin

Ski rack!! so that would be either Tracey's OHMSS Mercury Cougar or Sir Roger's FYEO Lotus Esprit Turbo?  ajb007/insane

Someone at the Mail or AML or EON Marketing doesn't know their Bonds!  ajb007/crap

Re: NTTD DB5 Car & Driver Article

I really wouldn't worry about the exact wording of an article in a newspaper for morons, that way madness lies. The Mail's writer couldn't even work out if the film was made in '85 or '87 in that one article, and notoriously thought that Daniel Craig was talking to a 'female assistant' in a photo on the set of NTTD when he was actually talking to Barbara Broccoli. Ignore the Mail at all costs.
Or you can read it as referring only to the skis, which is the word right next to the statement 'as the V8 Vantage had in the film'.

Here's the wording from Aston's actual press release:
"The Vantage 007 Edition can even be delivered with a set of The Living Daylights inspired limited edition skis and ski rack – referencing the ‘winterised’ V8 saloon from the film."

And also from that press release for Howard:
"Available as a manual or automatic, the Vantage 007 Edition also boasts a side strake Vantage badge and is limited to 100 units globally.
