Re: AJB live commentary on SKYFALL

Hey, hold on there N24!!!! Far too soon!!!

27

Re: AJB live commentary on SKYFALL

It's far too soon to do it, but I don't think it's too soon to talk about it. I look forward to watching the Bond films we skiped in the first round, but I think it could be nice to watch for example "The guns of Navarone" together at some point.

Re: AJB live commentary on SKYFALL

It's a good film, and David Niven is in it, but it'll be a while before we get to that.

Alistair MacLean is a good subject for us Bond fans to get into, but if we go there eventually I'd suggest "Where Eagles Dare" first.

Re: AJB live commentary on SKYFALL

I was actually thinking of "Where eagles dare" when I wrote "The Eagles nest", I just translated the Norwegian title without thinking.  ajb007/lol
I don't think we'll watch it in May, but we may be ready in June.

Re: AJB live commentary on SKYFALL

May I respectfully suggest the Harry Palmer films?
Or the Austin Powers films?

That said, count me in for WHERE EAGLES DARE.  That's my personal favorite 'men on a mission' film, and I'm due for my annual viewing of it.

'Second rate punk, huh?'

Re: AJB live commentary on SKYFALL

The issue with non-Bond films, even some big ones, is that a lot of members won’t have them on disc or might not be subscribed to a streaming service that has them. But this being a Bond forum, there’s a pretty good chance that most have access to all the Bond films; which is why these rewatches have worked.

Re: AJB live commentary on SKYFALL

But guys, plenty more Bond movies to watch first!

They will be back, when you pick a film with a better score! Newman's work hasn't impressed me, I'm afraid (even less with SP). I do like Adele's song, though.

I know nothing technical about music, but I think this is a gem; from an article by Warren Ringham, 'What Is The James Bond Sound?' in his 2019 souvenir programme for Q The Music's James Bond Concert Spectacular:

"In 2012, Paul Epworth called the Minor 9 chord the 'Bond chord' [courtesy of John Barry] and used it at the start (and end) of the song 'Skyfall' which he composed with Adele."

Re: AJB live commentary on SKYFALL

It derives from the last chord of the original "James Bond Theme" as... arranged... by John Barry and played by Vic Flick. There, it's an E Minor Major 9. Variations of it appear frequently in the Bond scores.

Re: AJB live commentary on SKYFALL

I still say that this is a killer version of the SKYFALL theme song:

If you look up the interview David did with me, it's the last chord I play on my guitar at about 21 minutes in.

I'm looking forward to it, too. This time I won't be doing my usual discussion of the musical cues, since there are a lot of them and they're mostly very similar.

I confess to having admitted, to my personal playlist of (104) selected Bond songs and cues, four cues of Newman's from SF (and a couple more of his from SP). From SF:

'Shanghai Drive' (because it's Newman's style at its best, linking well with SF's image of Shanghai as a neon-lit but impersonal cityscape)

'Komodo Dragon' (because it starts with Newman celebrating Epworth's and Adele's title track, in John Barry style)

'Breadcrumbs' (for the reveal of the DB5, evoking at its beginning the style of GF but via the David Arnold arrangement of the Bond theme for Craig in CR)

'Mother' (I don't really warm to this but it kind of works well as a signature for Judi Dench's M in SF)
