Topic: Other iconic castings are comparable to Connery as Bond?

In his video afterSean Connery's death Calvin Dyson said Connery as Bond was one of the most iconic casting decisions in cinema history. Calvin used Chaplin as the Tramp as an example. I suggest Eastwood as The Man with No Name.
What actor/role pairing would you comapre to Connery as Bond?

That's the one which leapt to my mind instantly too.

I think the Chaplin example is a bit off in a way, as Chaplin wasn't cast as the Tramp; he created the character and it sort of organically grew.

Sellers as Clouseau would be one slightly closer to the Connery example, but even he grew from a co-star into a lead because of the success of the casting.

Er... Look earlier in the thread, N24.

I guess I interpret the question as what roles is it most difficult to even picture someone else playing the part, the actor and the character become synonomous, so based on that:

Jason Bourne - Matt Damon
James T. Kirk - William Shatner
Ethan Hunt - Tom Cruise
Han Solo - Harrison Ford (I also agree with the Indiana Jones mention above)

i think I'd take issue with that one. He's iconically associated with it, but any number of people could have played it and probably better than he did. He was decent but never really the most gifted actor.

Perhaps the most iconic characters are the ones who can be reccognized by a silouette?

He was lucky, that's true.

I think Star Wars would have been a success with a range of actors in the part as Luke Skywalker. If any casting choise was important in the origional trilogy it was Harrison Ford.
